Blame Brandel then, he's the one that told me that last night. ETA: Just double checked it. They are using a range at the west course. Are you Merion's chairman or something?
I've played Merion a few times. I've only played the West course once but don't remember seeing a driving range on that course. In fact the last time I was there they were expanding the driving range at the East course, which I assumed was for the US Open.
If they are using a driving range at the West Course, all you have to do is take Ardmore Ave a few blocks to get to the tournament course. I'd imagine the street will be closed off anyways so its not much more than a 4-5 minute golf cart ride.
Unless there is a shortage in carts to drive the players from range to tee box I cant see why it would take anymore than 10-15 minutes.
The funny thing is that Merion had to lengthen the course just to get it to the size it is now. It use to be even shorter.

I thought I read that they closed the West Course to make a driving range out of some of the property over there. Not sure about that though.

And it’s not like you can get in some final hybrid-wedges at the end of your warm-up session, go straight to 11 tee and replay those shots. Oh, no. The driving range for this U.S. Open at Merion is a mile or so down the road, on the club’s West Course. The players are being shuttled by van from the West Course, where their locker room is located, to the East Course. Allowing for pedestrian traffic and various bits of commotion, the players can expect the elapsed time from the practice tee to the first tee to be at least 25 minutes.

So realistically, they can count on 30 minutes from the time they hit that last shot on the range until they tee off.
Wow.
Wowzer.
Wow.
Wowzer.

Well if they closed the West Course and made it into a driving range that would make sense. It could also see where it being a mile or so down the road if they placed it at the far end of the West course (closer to highway 476) which mainly runs parallel to Ardmore Ave and Ellis Rd.
My apologies to whoever I called out as being wrong. I just assumed they would be using the range at the East Course and didn't realize they would construct a range out of the West Course. This is one of my favorite courses to have played and hate when people rag on it for being to short or what else.
Not sure why they don't use the driving range at the East Course, maybe it is too small? Would be interesting to hear why.
Inconvenient yes, but nothing a pro golfer shouldn't be able to handle. The 1st/11th holes are short par 4, less than 400 yards. The drive shouldn't be a problem, its the approach shots on those holes.

It almost looked like they made a driving range tee out of one of the fairways, and you would be hitting into an area that is made up of 2 fairways that are perpendicular to the tee box/fairway where you hit from. It's strange. Be you, just messing with you buddy

The obvious ones...Nicklaus, Woods, Palmer, Player

Off the top, I can come up with 12 which leads me to believe the number is probably between 15-20.
