Possibly a good reason to buy NDSN, but not sure it provides a buy side case for XOM.

XOM is big into plastic and growing that side of the business.

The investment in pastics lacks vision to me and plastics are only marginally better than oil. Shrinking margins, overgrown supply, shrinking demand.

IDK. Plastics wouldn't move the needle for me to put my money in Exxon. Like Jag said, there are better ways to invest in plastics, but to each their own.

All of this is certainly correct over the past few quarters and near term looking forward.

at these prices i dca in to xom,rdsb,cvx....
on decent drop days....i have a lot in growth funds and individual bonds (3-5 years avg yield 4percentish)... big big oil will morph into more energy than just oil and always has the downstream chemicals... these may go lower but will recover and if stabilize and yield more than 4percent be more of a part of my bond bucket than growth (sp500) bucket

my bonds are laddered for 3-7 years out and as they mature i need to replace.. bonds are a little pricey now for the yield so picking up undervalued or well valued big caps with historically decent yields...if xom lowers dividends there will be a decent buy opportunity

Where are you getting shrinking demand for plastics?

Increased supply, fair case there... demand is booming

It won't offset shrinking O&G prices and/or demand though. Plastic isn't a good reason to invest in Exxon imo.

No but it keeps the company afloat until the other parts of the business come off the down cycle

The funny thing about oil and gas is that one hiccup in supply will make it skyrocket. The big survivors will eat up the little ones who went out of business.

However, Trump is making peace in the Mideast and reducing the chances of a hiccup in supply.

Still, traffic has returned to high levels in NYC in part because nobody wants to ride the trains and subways.

There’s a natural depletion curve so I’m not so sure I buy the ability for opec and others to rebound so quickly. The oil market is very complex and I just don’t see a good balance with so much unknown on the demand side. Eventually lack of investment will catch up. I’m very interested in the IEA report on Thursday to see the change in consumption and production.

Thinking about the longer term, I suspect that the same technology that has allowed America to become energy independent will soon be applied elsewhere all over the world. That will probably produce a glut even after covid ends.

In the shorter term, I suspect that all of production shutdown after oil's price per barrel became <$0 will produce a spike in price when demand ramps up.

Just my guess.

I have 305 shares of Exxon. Bought right at about $34 back in March. I've lost all gains in it and sitting right at about even. Should I sell or hold? Opinions?

Prefer CVX in big oil in US, prefer TOT over US, but they all come with risk. One broker has made four calls on CVX this year and was dead on on the first three. He just made the Buy call last week. We'll see how he bats for the year.

Chevron (CVX) closed with a higher market value than Exxon Mobil (XOM) Tuesday for the first time on record—but 2020 has been painful for both stocks.

Chevron outperformed the sector, gaining 2% to $73.78, leaving it with a market cap of $142.028 billion. Exxon Mobil advanced just 0.3%, finishing the day with a $141.646 billion market cap. The difference of $383 million might be small, but it counts.

Watched it hover around ~ 44 then down to ~ 42. Collected dividend and out around 41. Quickly realized this isn’t my Grandfathers Esso.
