75 is fine during the day but I couldn't sleep well at that temp.

I sleep at 75 all the time. My AC couldnot stay at 75 during the day in summertime. I have to get my attic re insulated as what I currently have is very old.

The last 2 months have been over $450.

Has anyone tried this...
Cool-N-Save

It's supposed to drop you electric bill up to 30%.
Supposidly it was studied at Tulane.

450 each of the last 2 or 450 for both?
We're going into a heat wave now of 105.
Wife is sleeping down stairs at 66...she works nights at hospital and sleeps days.
Dogs and I are ready to take our mid day nap upstairs at 70. I expect a bill of over 300 for August.

If I kept both of my units on 66, my bill would be $1,000

I seriously doubt my upstairs unit would hold at 66, much less cycle on/off. If I put both (which are newer HE units, 2.5 ton and 3 ton) on 72 24/7 it would probably be ~ $700 and run continuously from noon until 9PM, residential AC's are not designed to cool -30 degrees below external temps unless you have a super energy efficient home which a tri-level contemporary home is not.

ust hit my record. $286.
We've had 100 temps every day for all of July.
Wife likes the AC central unit at 66. She's cold blooded. Dogs like it cold, too. House is 2K sf.

Hard to believe you maintain 66F unless your house is made of solid concrete blocks, insulated with foam in the attic, is otherwise air-tight, and has complete shade cover. Myself, I can only dream of getting it down to 66F in my recently built house on a 100F day in our high humidity conditions. I'd be overjoyed to get it down to 72F, but 73-74F is about the best I can do. Only at night or when it's substantially cooler than 100F can I get into the 60s.

I've got good insulation and I've got a bunch of giant trees that surround the house. But I'm not running both units all the time.

The routine works like this in a 24 hour period.

I set downstairs at 68 when I go to bed at 8pm.
Upstairs is off.

When I get up at 5 am I turn downstairs off and Upstairs on (it's usually 78 from overnight warming).
I leave at 7 am and turn upstairs off.
Wife gets home at 7 am and turns downstairs to 66 and goes to bed.

I get home at 11 am and turn upstairs on to 68.
Both units are working hard from 11 am till 6pm when I turn upstairs off.

To help with the local grid I always wash clothes and dishwasher early morning or late at night. There was a power outage in a Shreveport neighborhood yesterday due to overload.

$200.00 3300sqft.house. The main reason for my low electric bill,is the windows. Marvin windows with some special coating (don`t remember what)and they are filled with argon gas. When we built the house double insulated aluminum window for the house were around $6000.00,the windows we went with were$25000.00. Bought them for the way they look, but they are very efficient.

Are they stained glass cathedral windows?

Isn't that extremely expensive?

I listen to a radio show from Ohio called "At Home with Gary Sullivan" on Sunday.

He had a caller that said his AC installer advised him that no central AC is going to reduce your indoor temp more than 20 degrees from outdoor temp.

Sullivan was uncertain about that. I'm certain it's wrong. Right now the temp outside my house is 102. The temp inside is 68.

Edit at 3 pm... Damn, I'm losing ground now.
Temp outside is 108. Inside is 73.

I have been told that numerous times by HVAC people. It still depends on the insulation/energy efficiency of the house, condition of the AC, blower capacity plus the ducting/supply/return capacity and air turnover. My upstairs would probably hold at 72, but if it was set on 78 at 2PM it would not be able to pull the temp down to 72 until the midday heat dissipates.

I'm convinced that the reason I get away with such a low bill is the trees. When I designed the house I could have made a 1 story by cutting down some giant trees. but I made a small footprint and left oaks and pines that are over 100 years old to shade the roof well above the second story.

The only direct sunlight on the roof is from 11 am to 2 pm.

It is very common for older people to become afraid of trees crashing into their roofs. Ron Wilson talked about this on his radio show years ago. He encouraged older folks to leave the old trees for the people who come after you just as people who are now dead left the old trees you currently enjoy.

I'll never cut down my old trees as long as they are healthy. If one falls on me in a storm and I die...can't think of a better way to go.

I installed an attic fan and put a tint on my windows this spring. It has made a huge difference.

I had to cut down 6 large old trees on the west side of my house last year, it definitely has led to more direct sunlight on the roof from 12:00 onwards. They all had been hit by lightning or had serious decay problems and after putting a lot of time and money into a whole house reno the risk was no longer worth it. I went to check something with the AC in the attic last week and the fold up aluminum ladder literally scalded my hand when I touched it, easily 140 in the attic.

I've got well over 120 large trees on a 1.3 acre lot. I got one hit by lightening 4 years ago and I thought I lost a baby. I nursed that tree back to health with scraping and insecticide. It came back in Spring and is still alive and doing great.

My biggest tree is a red oak about 200 years old and it shades a lot of the roof along with 20 tall pines. It's diseased and dying but it will outlive me. And the hollowed out inside is home for birds in the spring.
