I plan on downshifting to a part-time job well before I hit my number, and pray to God time in the market accrues the rest. No way I can keep doing this shite until I'm in my 60s.

I take a very simplistic view

I am 55 soon, 75 seems to be a realistic goal for the finish line based on my family history. 20 years is 7300 days. $500/day x 7300 days is 3.6MM.

I won’t get there (3.6MM) in a year from now and likely not in 10 years but I’m not working until 65. So I will have to set a strict budget for my retirement days (just like most people) and live simply

but I don’t have any bills (except my medical deductible) that I cant live without and we plan to entirely downsize and travel around the western US at a leisurely pace. I think we can make it work on whatever I have money wise for fifteen years (twenty would be a stretch)

my primary concern as the hourglass starts to run out is doing shite we like to do while we are physically able to do it

Why even say that? fricking hater. I'm tired of you petty fricks on here. Y'all turned off some damn good and knowledgeable posters on here. Y'alls loss. Not all of us are full of shite or bragging. We're just stating facts. Try to enlighten some of you knuckle draggers and get bullshite OT responses. I don't give two shits, but I know a couple that have quit and are damn well versed in markets, both domestic and international, and have made $10's of millions of dollars for themselves or others. Just keep that stupid shite to yourself.

Damn man. Don't be so negative, but I get where you're coming from. Get a good doc. Take care of yourself and make sure you get all your routine screenings. I plan on posting here for along time and I enjoy our interactions and your input. Keep your plan by all means, but I hope you far exceed 75 brother.

It's an anonymous board. I truly doubt most of the numbers being presented as facts. With that said, anything is possible.

I'm on track for about $2.2M at 59.5 and that will be more than enough to live out the rest of my life. I have no one to leave any real inheritance to, spread mine out among our church and a couple of humane societies for whatever is left. At $2.2M, I can withdraw 5% and still have enough for 30 more years, which will more than last to my death.

Actually, you're wrong. The people who like to post here about how rich they are generally do not share any useful information. Maybe you can be the first.

Your baseline projection is based on spending $15,000/m $182k/yr? Not accounting for SS either. And you're just not going to make that ambitious goal so "F it we'll live on less".

Yes, that's a very simplistic and almost useless retirement projection model but good luck.

Maybe...who gives a shite. I have no reason to exaggerate. I don't give a shite if anybody believes me or anyone else. It's a goddamn message board. I take each poster at face value and over years...you figure out who knows their shite and who don't. Just like when Hawgeye tipped me off to matador, I know from time and experience, that dude knows his shite about oil and gas. Now I did my DD, but I wish I would've just bought it when he told be. I did damn well getting in at about $1.80...his arse got in at like $1.10-$1.20. shite's been over $13 and staying above $12. Not to mention the only loss they had this year was 2nd quarter I believe when they cut production and focused on repairs and acquiring more offshore to diversify from shale. It's one I'd be able to retire on. And I'm gonna keep buying on drops.

Now I could have written him off years back from the Arkansas board talking about being a big donor, having inside info on coaching hires etc. But I didn't. And come to find out he knows who I am but won't tell me who he is, but I've narrowed it down to about 3-4 folks since he slipped that his grandpa was from Smackover and in oil and gas. Long story short, they are ALL rich AF. And still big in the oil and gas industry. So if he tips the board off to something related...buy that shite. Do your DD, but he knows his shite. That's just one example.

I'm 3-4 years from retirement. I am just hoping that the market doesn't fully crash, and would be okay with 5% returns for those years at this point.

To me, it's all about your debt load. I do plan to take SS at 62. I see no reason to not take it at the first opportunity. I know it's more at 67 and further, but who knows how long you have, and I paid into it for 40 years, would like at least some return on my money.

I do too (and thanks!) but Alzheimer’s haunts my family on both sides. Like anything else it’s part of my risk assessment

It’s a matter of, quite literally, that I likely can’t “take it with me”.
not to be morbid but my wife has strict instructions on what to do when/if it happens. Until then I intend to live large away from home and live miserly at home. This years returns have made a major improvement to my progress

This board and these topics always suffer from a selection bias in the responses. So we end up with the high earners/savers “bragging” about their balances and low earners who are not ashamed to post theirs.

It’s a very unrepresentative cross-section and accomplishes nothing for the OP unless he fits these categories.

As I’ve always mentioned in these threads, it is MUCH more beneficial for OP to introduce his situation and seek feedback rather than a blind poll.

Typically, you are correct. And I have. I have never professed to being a stock guru and I don't trade. I buy and hold. But anyone that listened to me early on about STLHF has done WELL. And because of dipshits, I didn't bring it to the board. I only chimed in after someone I did a new hire physical on for them asked about the company.

Disclaimer-sometimes I have flashbacks to the OT and even Poli board. I'm actually pretty cool IRL, but I have to be nice and deal with the public and listen to everyone's woes and ailments, so sometimes it's therapeutic to go online and be a pompous a-hole. I fricking love haters and downvotes. I can just envision them pounding away at the keyboard all fricking red faced and about to stroke out while I'm sitting back laughing my arse off and enjoying a beer. Yeah...I'm a a-hole sometimes. All caps for emphasis. But I really do have a few redeeming qualities.

Good post. Have an upvote. I mean people asks a question and if you got shite and answer honest you get shite on. If you're broke and trying to get some advice, you get shite on. Take that shite to the OT or back to your fatass wife and your miserable life. If you think I'm talking to you...I am. (not to poster I'm replying to. Well thought out and excellent post)

Are you putting money aside?
Just get the money into something as early as possible. Time value of money takes time.

I'm no high roller. I started late in my opinion (27). But the last 7 years has put me in a position where I can at least see a finish line (which I never define. I'm just doing my best). I'm 43. Net wealth is basically doubling about every 3 to 4 years. Retirement is doubling every 4 to 6 years.

Up to now, as I make more I have been able to put aside more. That may change as kids get to college (kids are paying for their own college, but that doesnt mean I wont be assisting and trying to set them up for success). The fact that I have built up as much as I can the past 7 years makes me feel that I can let off the gas if need be and still keep moving forward with growth.

this right here.
maybe I’m not smart or disciplined enough to save while servicing debt, but the fact is I’ve been debt free for three years now and my savings have quadrupled

I go with the simplest explanation which is, for me, getting free and clear from debt was my most important accomplishment

Gotcha, but get routing mental status screenings. Exercise that brain, which you obviously do. I enjoy you stock tips/rec's. And don't be afraid to start aricept early. Unless it gives you the shits or some other side effect, it can delay progression by up to 10 years. And the earlier started the better. Anyone I have with strong FH, this is my advice in addition to nutrition, lifestyle, SLEEP!!!!! (good sleep and screen for sleep apnea and other sleep disorders). Just my opinion, by all means check with your doc and if they are knowledgeable in it, get with a neurologist that deals with it. Many don't want to.

Yeah, I don't doubt that there are people on here who have a ton of money. People with the real money are usually pretty quiet about it, though.

We've been inundated with some folks lately who post just to share how much money they have and that's it. In fact, there is one poster who is an estate attorney who pretends not to understand anything about basic finance. He's like "I make 500k a year, and I don't know what to do with it. I'm so helpless. Boo-hoo." That guy is just here to brag.
