Really? That many people dont pay their balances every month?
You are getting things mixed up. Visa, MC, and Amex get paid the moment the consumer buys something. The bank that issues the card has to worry about collecting the balance, not the card brands.

Airline margins are notoriously thin. Economy class seating runs at a loss for many (most?) airlines if I recall correctly.

Restaurants - Lowest
Oil & Gas - Highest
If judging by media rhetoric, probably so.

Visa and big credit cards have net income margins of like 50%
Not sure of an exact figure; but, I’m sure it’s shockingly high. When I was in grad school we had an Exec from Visa as a guest speaker. Granted; this was more than a decade ago. He asked the audience to guess how many people are on Visa’s payroll? Some guessed tens of thousands; others guessed thousands. His reply was fewer than 100 employees worldwide.
It’s nearly entirely digital and they positively rake it in.

Software sales margins can be absolutely insane if it’s a well run company

There are some niches in medical that you can turn a massive profit from without being licensed, but ethics are going to come into question.

Don't those roofing companies have a huge margin? I don't know much about this industry but have been told by several people that their margins would make me sick as I recently paid for a new roof $17,000 and wasn't an insurance claim, all out of pocket.
Probably 25% gross. Net is gonna be a lot less depending on overhead. Insurance jobs are where the money is made, and new installs are really just to have work for the crew.

Visa has over 30,000 employees.

I used to do a lot of M&A and S1s across a ton of industries. The highest profit margin i have ever been associated with is hot sauce. Second highest would be talent based pyramid schemes (think Morris Bart). Oil and Gas is not even remotely in the discussion

Checks out. At the time cash was still a thing, e-commerce was still in its infancy and Visa was mostly an American and European company.
Now nobody carries cash and it’s a global company. I’d imagine the IT support alone needs thousands to maintain.

I'm not familiar w/ the profit margins throughout all of the industries in America, but I own a pest control company. Just employ 3 people. Profit margins are pretty frigging nice. Of course, as you grow, profit margins slim down a bit, but still, the actual cost of treating a customers home for a regular pest control service is incredibly low. Of course, if you don't treat the home properly the call backs will crush those margins, but still, it's not like this shite is rocket surgery and it's basically a subscription service. Constant repeat business.
