Yeah you are sitting in the dealership for like an hour waiting on those dudes for paperwork. You take out your phone and add the car. Takes 5 minutes.
I bought 4 cars with cash over the last 4-5 years and did this every time.

I have no idea why anyone would trust a dealership to take care of something like this.
This idea has never even entered my mind

You should owe the fine. Intent or not, you put other drives at risk of ruin driving around without coverage. Could have caused a life altering accident and not had means to adequately compensate injured party. F an uninsured motorist!

Like there’s any other way.

No offense, but what are you, 2?
How could you buy a car and one not check to see what the new insurance rates would be first off? In doing so, you have to provide a VIN number to the insurance co. At that point they would ask if you would be REPLACING a car?
When the transaction of purchase is complete, you simply call the insurance company and tell them that car 1 is gone and car 2 in now in place?
That would have removed the insurance on 1 and added the other. Furthermore, when you registered car 2, did you let the DMW know that car 1 was no longer in your possession or did you simply hope for the new owner to register it?

I’m not sure what you’re trying to say. How do you provide a vin for a car that hasn’t been created? If Louisiana OMV doesn’t have physical possession of your plate, you are getting fined.
I actually paid insurance for an additional two months after I surrendered the vehicle because I knew what a PITA they are…and it still wasn’t enough.

I’ve never had the dealership send anything to my insurance company.
You should handle all of that. Just call and give new vin…
Dealership doesn’t do any of that.
Have you never bought a car before?

I've never heard of this in my life.

When you go test drive a car and decide that it is the car you are moving forward with, it would be irresponsible to at least not look at how your insurance would be affected, just so you know. At that point the VIN is in the window or on a dealership print out.

I was hit with over a thousand in fines for a "1 day" lapse. I switched insurance when I was insuring several vehicles, more than any rational human would have... One policy ended on one day and the next policy picked up the next day. I didn't know for a couple of years that I had fines until I tried to renew my license. It was expensive and I had passed all the deadlines for appeals and what not.
The stupid law is just a tax on people who try to attempt to follow the laws. People who don't have insurance don't care if they have a valid license and don't care if they "owe" the state money.
