In 2009 I had occasion to do a tourist trip to Venezuela. Got to see Angel Falls, climbed Roraima, etc. Really beautiful country.

Anyway, at the time Chavez was still in power and a black market in currency had already sprung up. It was done pretty openly - right inside the airport in fact, and just about anywhere else too. A sure sign things are about to fall apart but it had only gotten started. During my trip I was able to get around 5 Bolivares for 1 US Dollar.

I was rummaging through some old stuff just now and found a 2 Bolivar note from back then. The exchange rate (if you can exchange at all anymore) is estimated to be around 200,000 for 1 dollar now.

This is my CSB for today.

Put it in the drawer next to your Iraqi dinars.

It's really crazy. I have a buddy who just went (idiot) and he stayed one month in a five star resort for $150.

I actually came here to laugh, until I opened and read the thread.
Still laughed, but not for the same reasons

He might have been the only guest too. Tourism has just cratered.

Where have you been? Still living in Thailand? I’ll bet I could retire there now with Thai baht exchange rate.

I've been back in the States for a while. I'm making a permanent move to Colombia this year though.

Not sure if you're joking or not but a retirement in Thailand would be a dream come true compared to the USA.

If you have six digits or more in the bank and can make $1,000 a month or more with rentals, online or some sort of passive income, you should go.

What's prompting this? The legal prostitution?

I have thought of moving to Portugal for a bit. It's ranked as the best place to live in the world right now and it's cheap. It would be temporary and just for the experience much like my move to here in L.A. is. Something like Colombia would be a much shorter trip to go back and visit home, though.

I would be scared shitless . I mean, people are fighting for bread to feed their children. My life means zero in that country right now. They would shoot me in a heart beat for whatever cash I had on me. Can't say I blame them if I had starving kids at my house.

Colombia is cheap, beautiful, and has the hottest women in the world.

I would be lying if I said I wan't obsessed with the women there (but it is only one reason). They are obviously beautiful but also very feminine and kind. A 10 in Colombia will cook, clean and is friendly. A 10 in the States just expects shite (in my experience) and are normally wrapped up in their-self.

All of my entrepreneurial friends live there so I am surrounded by intelligent/successful people. I do not have that social circle in Alabama.

It's cheap. My penthouse apartment is $1,000 per month that I share with a roommate. I am walking distance to bars, restaurants and dancing. No need for a car. I think the most I have ever spent was $3,000 a month and that was truly balling out. $2,000 a month is a good budget.

I speak Spanish so it's much easier to assimilate into the culture. Spanish was pretty easy for me to learn while I never picked up any Portuguese living in Brazil.

You should go visit. Medellin is truly a magical place and is my favorite city in the world.

The negatives are it can be dangerous if you don't pay attention. The pollution in MDE is pretty bad but you can head out to the countryside on the weekends.

The only place I've come close to liking as much as MDE is Seville, Spain. It really just depends on what you're looking for.

Living abroad seems a lot more feasible these days. I lived in Cadiz, Spain for a year back in 05-06 and while I had an awesome time, I felt very isolated. Home internet was still new and very expensive and cell phones were not common.

These days with facetime, fast internet, and overall increased globalization, you can easily stay connected with friends and family.

Damn I need to move abroad again. It would be a great experience for my daughter.

Spain is incredible. I loved everything about it except the people. I'm not sure if it was the vibe I was putting out or a cultural difference but I did not find the people to be very friendly.

You're right. It's really easy to stay connected. A few times my family set up an Ipad at the dinner table, set up facetime and it's like I am sitting right there.

Incredible times we are living in.

Likewise. There was a lot of hatred towards GW Bush and the Iraq war, which led to a general dislike or standoff-ish nature towards Americans. Hell, there were giant communist party rallies in Cadiz every couple of months.

As a matter of fact, most of my friends in Spain were Brazilian exchange students. That turned out to be a blessing because it led to my infatuation with Brazil, Portugal, Portuguese language, and jiu-jitsu.

If we travel to Europe these days, we pretty much stick to France and Italy.

You don't say?

Which is why I was looking at Portugal. I can literally rent a mansion with a staff for like $5500 per month. I don't need that obviously but that gives you an idea of how inexpensive it is. The other bonus is being so close to the rest of Europe for weekend trips.

I have been thinking about it actually. Want to visit Colombia and Cuba. Also want to visit Saint Kitts and Nevis.

I have also considered staying in Play Del Carmen for a while. Some resorts there offer an all inclusive package for like $22K for 7 months or something. Going in February to look into it further.

I've heard nothing but good things about Portugal. It's definitely somewhere I want to visit.

The all-inclusive sounds pretty terrible to be honest. I normally go to one once a year and by the end of the week I'm ready to GTFO.

Same activities every week, no meaningful relationships as everyone is only staying a week or two. Same restaurants, etc.

I'd be bored out of my mind.

I love Colombia. Been several times and I have basically been to the entire country except Cali. Each part offers something unique. Medellin is great, but my favorite city in the country is Santa Marta. Love that little city!

Cali is awesome too! I took salsa lessons for six weeks and still sucked.

Such a cool city....

I haven't been to Santa Marta but all my Colombian friends love it.
