There are other firms out there that you can get hooked up with recruiters at. Just do a simple google search for professional recruiting firms. I worked with Parker & Lynch for a little bit when I was flirting with the Nashville market. There are jobs out there, you have the advantage of having a Nashville area address so that opens more doors than I was able to.

This Job Market Stinks

Got bored at my job late last year (oil and gas engineering) and decided to test the market, updated my résumé in early January and customized four cover letter templates for the type of positions I apply for.
Since then I have applied to at least 40 jobs and NOT ONE positive reply so far, already over 10 rejections. And I'm not just looking locally. Big blow to the ego for sure

Guess I'm staying put for now.

Similar experience for me. Applied to 33 jobs. Got one interview that didn't lead to a job. Got another that led to an adjunct teaching position for $1500/class.

Luckily I can play and teach guitar. If not, I'd be starving right now.

I think my last job search I put out something around 90.

33 is kinda low.

Both ways are probably the wrong way to go about it. Have to make connections.

Took me two years after grad school to get a job in my field. I had about 10-15 in person interviews, about 30 phone interviews. I think I applied to about 300 jobs. I applied all over the country. I almost didn't bother applying to the job I got because I was so overqualified. They ended up tailoring it specifically for me and added a lot of responsibilities than initially listed.

With 7 years you should be the controller or close to it.

Get a part time job to lessen the blow.

We have accounting positions open for months that we cannot fill because the small amount of applicants we do get have basically no experience. This is with good starting pay and good benefits. If you're looking for a position that starts in the $30s, you've got to have something wrong on your resume or you're not applying for the right jobs.

Or maybe the Nashville market is drastically different from Baton Rouge, but I have a hard time believing that.

Are you looking only at private organizational work, or also public? Not from the Nashville area but i would think a decent sized city would be optimal for a guy with a degree and experience to get a staff position in public. In Baton Rouge there are usually openings at all sizes of firms, especially before tax season.

Hope everything works out and you find something you would be happy with!

What kind of experience do you have? After 7 years with BS in Accounting I would think you'd be shooting for jobs higher than $35K. I would definitely get your CPA. Now I know that's easier said than done. When I first took FAR and BEC I failed miserably and I quit. Then I went back a few years later and passed. While you're out of work when you aren't sending resumes out do nothing but study. You should be able to knock it out quickly. If you aren't looking at public jobs then a CPA likely won't be required for the level you're looking at but it will certainly help. Also you mentioned Robert Half. Are you doing work there or using them to find a job? Robert Half is how I found two of my last three jobs. They've been a tremendous help for me in my job searches if you can I would search for jobs with them.

I'm not understanding how he has 7 years and no progression. That's probably what is scaring employers off.

I'm using RH to find work. I put off the CPA for years b/c I was terrified of it (word of mouth, reputation, hype). Now I wish I pursued it earlier.

I got promoted once. Still, I'm applying to stuff like A/P clerk or whatever and not getting anything.

When I say $35k, I mainly thinking of gov't or private. Public Accounting starts of in mid 40s for smaller firms and bigger firms it 50k+.

Some would scoff at $35k but I've seen accounting manager jobs in that ballpark. Here's an example:

Nashville Ballet Accounting Manager

I also applied to an accountant position with Tennessee Credit Union (did the two interviews) and that was $18/hr. (about $37k per year).

I got you man. I completely understand. Even if you think you aren't qualified for something, apply anyway. And don't just use RH, go on indeed and apply the frick out of jobs for everything.

I had a hell of a lot less experience than you and I got a lot better money than youre trying to get. If you want me to look at your resume or if you want to see a copy of mine, post an email and I'll contact you up. You can remove your name from the resume if you want.

Good luck, man. Keep fighting the good fight and you'll find something.

It took me nearly 6 months after two advanced degrees to finally land a job in a field I wanted to work in. My pay isn't what I expected, but I'm getting a lot of experience.

Just keep applying and pass that damn CPA exam!

335 listings on Indeed. Apply for 10 each day. If previous companies have referred to you as overqualified, try for jobs you think are just above your reach.
