The VXX is ridiculously impaired right now due to the upward-sloping term structure. In the past 6 months, implied vol is UP and the VXX is DOWN 30%!
The VXZ is better because the term-structure is quite so upwardly-sloped, but it's still not great.
The XXV is the inverse note of the VXX. That's probably a decent way to get short vol, except for one key catch: if vol spikes such that the traded value gets to $10, then the entire note just "knocks out", and you are left not-short vol right when you probably want to be.

Ouch is right. I haven't checked this thread but I got out on Wednesday so I was only down about .40/share. Could have been much worse, and it's not like I have much money anyway, just a poor college kid. Lesson learned.
