I'm good at science, but it bores me. I can deal with a little more science, but I can't major in it. I've never been good at math, but I like math and stats... Numbers interest me as long as I can see what they represent in the real world. What do yall think of the business majors offered at LSU? I have an interest in all of them. Right now, I am leaning towards ISDS+IA minor. Has anyone followed a similar path? What is job outlook and salary like? I know I wont bust out of LSU making 80K, but I would like to know a decent salary is possible with this degree. Thank you!

ISDS degree is a great degree. I don't even know that you need to get an internal audit minor. Just go through the internal audit program at LSU and you will be fine. It is a great way to get a great internship the summer going into your senior year, alot of which turn into full-time jobs.

You can make good money with an ISDS degree, also look into the MS Analytics program at LSU. I think its just a 1 year graduate program, but you can make really good money after that.

it's a pretty good combo imo

with that combo, you will likely get into IT audit, so prepare on getting your cisa.

Thank you for your reply! So it would be quicker to go through IA Prog. rather than get a minor in IA? Made this assumption bc you said "Just" lol. Not that I am not willing to spend time in college, its that I am running out of money and need to get a "real job" soon. I am more than willing to go back and get a MS in Analytics (which sounds awesome by the way, thx for the suggestion), but I need to get finish a Bach. soon. Are there decently paid job opportunities with just an ISDS degree? Idk what you majored in but would an ISDS degree make me eligible to sit for CPA? I will have the 150 hrs covered by the time I graduate.

Go get an accounting degree. It’s more procedure than true “math”. You can get a CPA out of school after a year or so and make good money. Wrk for any company. If you don’t love it after graduation, get an MBA.

Excellent combo! As Egg said you could land an IT Audit job and make a good starting salary. Think 55-65k depending on location

As others have said the career path for someone with an ISDS degree is pretty strong. I would also look into taking any classes LSU may have on AI, automation/robotics, and other innovation type topics.

Regarding salary, first year staff/associates at any of the Big 4 professional services firms in NYC fresh from school make in the 70's. At least that's true for the advisory/consulting side. You can go the internal audit route, but honestly the work you will do on some of the more pure technology advisory side will be much more rewarding and interesting.

ETA: Not knocking the LSUCIA program as I completed it and it is a great program that makes finding a great internship quite easy (at least that was true in 2007).

Tshiz, I have thought heavily about accounting. I am signed up for an accounting class and will see if I enjoy it. I've heard about how accounting will be obsolete because computers will take it over & its incredibly boring with no reward. Any thoughts on that?

Bandit, is this ISDS with a MINOR in IA or doing the CIA prog? Location is Baton Rouge. Starting salary of 55-65K would be amazing though!

MS, I wonder how the CIA prog is now. Read many posts about it being the shi*t in 2008ish. I also wonder if ISDS is what it once was as well. How would I even get that info? I'm seeking online help bc advisors tend to oversell a major IMO.

It is possible to land Big4 with ISDS degree? Interesting.

Lastly, to get into more interesting tech work would that be a path with ISDS and AI as you mentioned?

Yes, you can work on the advisory/consulting side with an ISDS degree, particularly if you supplement with machine learning, AI, robotics, etc. The big 4 and other consulting firms have a high demand for that skill set, and it will only continue to grow.

It’s a good route to get your career started. I strongly suggest picking an industry to target and go from there. You can build on business learning from audit and move into other areas of the company/industry after learning the ropes.

Picking a good industry that keeps you interested is really something that will give you a boost down the road.

When I was your age, I thought about this issue in much the same way that you are. However, I think that probably was a mistake. Remember the saying, "a rising tide floats all boats?" There is a lot of truth to that. So if you want to have a successful career, look at what society allocates a lot of resources to and involve yourself in that.

For much of the past twenty years that has been investment banking/finance/professional sports/entertainment/real estate. For most of the previous twenty it was medicine and health care. Today, health care/medicine is in the equivalent of a bear market. Find the next winner in terms of the industry you identify.

If you can bring an understanding of statistics and science to the business world that will help you.

ISDS plus CIA program = IT Audit

Good job security and starting pay

Good learning ground

Awful sense of fulfillment

Everyone I knew during my 5 years at a Big 4 firm absolutely hated their time in IT Audit. They were all depressed and overworked. They all exited into something else as soon as they could.

I would recommend chatting with or shadowing an IT Auditor before fully committing to going down that path. This is your chance to choose an education that will impact the rest of your life. Educate yourself on it beyond asking TD and scanning college of business marketing material.

The above advice goes for any of you college kids trying to decide what to study.

What do you think just an ISDS degree will get me?
I'm a female... someone told me that will hinder me others have said it will make me marketable. Your thoughts?

Im an accounting major and about to start the CIA minor in the spring. I don't think there is a difference between the program and the minor but could be wrong. I think for the minor you need IA 1 (Spring), Case study in Auditing (summer), and IA 2(Fall) plus some accounting classes that are already covered in the ACCT curriculum so you may want to see what ACCT classes you would need to take to get the minor.

I majored in ISDS and took some IA classes, but it wasn’t technically a minor at that point. I still noted Internal Audit on my resume the first 5-10 years of my career and it paid dividends.

If you start out in a technical field and want to move in to management, IA can show your future bosses that you’re already comfortable with IT and financial controls. That’s something many young/new managers don’t bring to the table.

Being a female in a technology field won’t hurt you at all; particularly, if joining a large firm. Every large company is desperate for more women at all levels, and technology probably has less than other areas.

Internal Audit is a good way to get good experience and make good money.

You need to get in the business some at some point even if you go back to be audit director imho.

Accounting side I felt Audit was a good career starter for me. I did it a little too long, but in Finance now
