Square's transaction margin is rising as closed-loop transactions take more share of GPV. While this makes up a small part of Square today and Square/fintech co's make up small part of payments today, it offers a glimpse of the value of controlling both ends of the transaction.

YOU: load your CashApp with funds
MERCHANT: accepts payment via Square POS
this transaction is a closed loop, SQ makes money at both ends, AND can use your cash as an investment tool (just like a bank)

On the sellers’ side, Square is most well known for point of sale payments (primarily for brick and mortar)?—?but they’ve also expanded into ecommerce solutions (competing with Shopify and Stripe), payroll processing, invoices and B2B payments, lending, and more.
On the consumer side, Cash App has expanded from P2P payments into bitcoin, debit cards, loyalty rewards, stock trading, and remittances.
In this piece I want to ask the question, what if Square is more than the sum of these two parts?

its all about the data

But one key advantage of being a closed loop network, and working directly with merchants and consumers, is the ability to analyze consumer and merchant data. Visa and Mastercard don’t have that data. Over time this data advantage, used properly, can help a much broader set of merchants target customers and reduce CAC?—?and similarly enable offers that consumers want to transact on.

Amen. I went on a SQ research binge a month or so back and posted this when someone debated selling it. It's almost impossible to wrap your head around the addressable market here:
They already own over 50% of the PoS market, they surpassed Venmo in app downloads, and they’re rapidly expanding as an online bank (including business/payroll). In 5 years, SQ could own, from end to end, a huge chunk of the world’s financial transactions.
The big questions are how well can they monetize this and can they lure in wealthier customers and bigger businesses.

I don’t know you personally and it’s unlikely that we’ll ever meet (unless you happen to frequent road course race tracks on sports car weekends

That’s what i was thinking. I wanted to wait for it to go a little lower before entering the earnings run. Although I should just jump now. I’ll probably pickup FB tomorrow.
