Anyone heard of this and the validity of it?

Guy at work is trying to convince me that this is wave of the future.

Seems like a marketing gimmick to sell gold at a higher price.

Here is some helpful information to go along wth OP

What Are State Goldbacks?
State Goldbacks are privately issued, gold-backed banknote-style notes designed for local use, each representing a specific U.S. state and containing a precise fraction of 24-karat gold

Tangent , but why do people use an apostrophe to pluralize? It indicates possessive or a contraction. Occasionally there's a use case for using one if simply adding an s for a plural would create confusion but that's unusual.

Sounds contradictory since States can’t issue their own currency. If it’s a private company stamping a states name on a bill, it’s the equivalent of the Danbury mint and a completely unserious financial instrument.

With premiums that are essentially 100% of value, they it is of little investment value, or at least it appears that way. They are marketed as a "solid currency". Would be more potentially profitable to buy fractional gold eagles or some other coin if one is in the market for small gold investments.

People who don't know when to use apostrophes are the targets for goldbacks. Just like how Nigerian princes intentionally use bad grammar to eliminate anyone with an ounce of common sense.
