So i've been without a car for 3 weeks and just using an uber to work from the suburbs

in Houston. Work is about 8 miles away. Depending on traffic it can take about 15-25 min. I signed up for ride pass which costs $25 per month. It reduces my average trip from $19 to about $15. So paid for itself in about a week.
My wife has a minivan so we use that for other trips. I was looking to buy a truck (new or only a few years old) but just haven't found the right deal.
I was actually amazed at how little it costs to and from work with Uber. Plus it gives me the freedom to catch up on the news, have some small talk with a stranger, and not have to worry about stopping for gas, etc.
I know at some point I'll buy something but it really is awesome how automation continues to benefit the individual.

~700 dollars per month just to go to and from work? That's pretty expensive.

funny you posted this, last night i was thinking about getting rid of my 4 runner note , 515.00 and just UBERing till my wife got home from work.
I work out of the house and only go to gym and grocery store each week if its not work related where i fly or rent a car.
It's very tempting when you look at insurance and gas as a whole.

Your commute is about 4 hours a week. Most people on this site are in Baton Rouge or New Orleans, and their commutes are between 5 and 10 hours a week. Lotta wear and tear on the Silverado, too.
When you drive, you lose that time because you get nothing done and pay to do it . If you don’t drive, you automatically make the time potentially productive.
This thread makes you automatically smarter than 99% of the people on here. It’s one of the best life hacks there is.
The truth: a family of four with more than one car is most likely a family full of suckers.

How much is the average car note plus insurance per month? Add in registration fees, and I bet it’s close to $700/month for a lot of people in the burbs. Not saying that’s fiscally responsible but it would be nice to be able to focus on other things while commuting.

All-In cost of owning a car is surprisingly high.
My economics per month shake out as:
$700 note
$100 insurance
$40 gas
$60 tolls
$8 registration
$40 maintenance (about $500/year)
———————————
~$950/month
You can definitely do it cheaper than this but it illustrates the OPs consideration.

What if the car is paid off? Insurance, gas and wear/tear is a lot cheaper than $700 a month.
There are a lot of other factors to consider. What if you have kids in car seats? What if you use your vehicle for more than just going to and from work? Yes, it would be nice at times to not focus on driving during a commute but from a productivity perspective there are 168 hours in a week, your overall productivity won't change from the 4 hours commuting.

5 Year Cost To Own Vehicles
I just looked at the calculator of a 2017 Silverado. The 5 year cost to own one would come out to roughly $43,142, which comes out to $719/month.
A 2014 Camry comes in around $434/month.
I'd say depending on your choice of car has a lot to do with it.

Also how long you keep the vehicle or when you buy it (used vs new).
2017 Silverado costs more for 2017-2021 than the same vehicle costs for 2021-2025.

Renting vs owning arguments all over again

One way.
And I don’t always Uber. Wife sometimes picks me or drops me off including some locations in the middle.
As someone mentioned being a bit more productive in the hour is nice. Only draw back is I don’t do any grocery runs on the way home but the grocery store is only a mile from home and we use amazon a lot for stuff.
I’ll post my total spend at the end of the month to be accurate. As I said this wasn’t a purposeful exercise so not sure how long it will last. Also I’ll try to capture any inconvenience where having that 2nd car really would have saved time or money

Only 8 miles away. Why bike it to work?

Might give that a go when my bike actually arrives. Coming back from overseas.

The whole business model for years for Uber has been to move towards being a cheaper option than owning a car.
They are investing heavily on self driving car technology to be able to be at the front of that price drop threshold.
