Is this standard for most companies? I don’t have to pay it, but my friend has paid $800 so far this year for it.

Most companies offer short-term disability as part of a cafeteria plan where the employee can purchase at a group discount… Now long-term disability, is a different scenario. I found it common that long term coverage is provided by the employer at no or very minimal monthly cost

I have a “buy-up” on long term to get me to 100% vs the 60% or whatever is standard.

I would say generally it is elective on the short term side. If the company is charging you for it as a benefit, you have the ability to take it or not. If the company pays for it, you'll be enrolled automatically.

If they aren't a female with any plans of being pregnant in the future, there isn't much need for them to have short term disability.

I have been out twice on short term disability. We'd have been fine if I hadn't had it but it sure was nice for my paychecks to continue while I was recovering.

Long term is something everyone should have imo if it is offered. Short term depends on the person and their activities. I’m still playing soccer regularly thus I have both long and short term
