My brother in law is in the air national gaurd and is at LSU. His family had a big history in the Air Force (his dad only recently retired), but he wanted to go to LSU. This way he was still able to get in some sort of service while still attending school. He also currently has plans of a career in the Air Force once he's finished with school. The money he makes from doing it is a pretty nice little paycheck for a college student. He lives in a nicer apartment than I ever did and never seems to be hurting for cash.

I don't know what happens to you G.I. Bill benefits after you retire but if you have not used them yet, contact your nearest VA Service Center Rep and ask about transfering your benefits to him.

This would cover a majority of the expenses. Also, you can ask your Rep about Chapter 30, I think this is right but could be wrong..., which allows Louisiana residents (I really think you have to be a resident in LA...) and their dependents additional education benefits.

Hope this helps or at least points in the right direction.

Thanks for your service to our country.

I have about 1 year of remaining benefits as I completed my Masters Degree with the other 2 years. I have already done the paperwork to transfer that time to him but it will only cover a portion of his Freshman year. I have also saved a little towards his college as well but nowhere near as much as he will probably endure. Life is something, I joined the Army to get the money to go to LSU and will send my son instead 28 years later.

Worst comes to worst, he can pay for his own stuff if he really wants to go.

You can try this. LSU Board of Supervisors scholarship. Every board member gets 20 scholarships to give out at their discretion. I have no idea what kind of people get these, but you might have a chance at it with a nice letter telling your story (or your story through his eyes). Unfortunately, it looks like maybe only 2 of the 20 for each board member can be out of state, but it might still be worth a try.

Just emailed a buddy of mine about this because he has some intimate knowledge about the Board of Sups scholarships. Unfortunately, he said the 2 out of states are really competitive. Some of the sups don't even use all of their other 18.

I'm going to see him in person this weekend. I'll ask him about it, and see if I can get you any more info. I just think this is a pretty cool story, and I'm hoping it can work out that your son can catch a break to go to LSU.

Did you or his mom graduate from LSU? If so then he can get his OOS tuition cut by 75 percent.

Parents who are graduates have possible OOS tuition exemption. I suggest contacting the registrar for exemption requirements.

They eliminated that program 5 years ago.

Wish I had checked before posting my comments.

As it was the university received somewhat of a premium from those kids. Of course after graduation some of them would stay in Louisiana, become productive and pay taxes. As it now is I wonder how many of them attend their instate universities instead of LSU.

I bet the elimination of the program will prove to be penny wise and pound foolish.

I have a cousin in the same position as you. Went through ROTC at LSU and is a colonel in the Air Force. Has lived in another state for the past 20 years. His kids are now college-aged, but he had to send them to an instate school since out of state tuition was too high. No TOPS and no instate tuition. All of his family lives here. They were planning on staying with his mom, but tuition was just too damned high.

If he is for joining the military, the guard is not a bad option.

My youngest son has told me that he would join if that helped but that would put all three of my kids in the military and I don't think my wife is really looking forward to that. I like the La Air Guard option as it keeps him in the state afterwards. I pretty much know that I will be doing whatever it takes to send him. I appreciate all the insight and ideas to help my situation. I also downloaded the forms for the Board of Supervisors Scholarship and will definitely try for this as well.
