Nexus One was a vehicle for launching Android onto iphone-level phones, at which it was an overwhelming success. The fact that Scoop does not see the future revenue streams from putting your search engine (you know, that thing that they do kind of well) onto literally billions of devices is, well, not very surprising. eta: To preempt here, nor is the fact that the above post does not relate to Apple in any way, shape, or form, but will certainly be panned as being "against an awesome company." :win:

I would also like to add that HTC made the Nexus One and still use it. It is now called the HTC Desire, or some such.
Also, don't forget that Google runs Youtube. Just like the Android this was not profitable for them at first. Now Youtube pays them a nice ransom for their purchase.
Disclaimer: I don't know if Apple makes their phones or not.

Of course they don't. They off-shore everything from Asia just like every one else does. That's the sole reason they have supply constraints...wait for it...surprise...just like HTC (who is based in frickING ASIA)! Samsung and LG make almost all of the screens you see on current generation phones. Qualcomm, Samsung, TI, Intel make essentially all of the modern mobile cpus. Companies like Apple and HTC just assemble the parts and pretty them up, they don't physically produce anything technologically. Scoop can tell you all of this, I'm sure.
eta: I take that back, Apple does produce something technologically, in fact, their primary value-adding product and by far the primary differentiating feature (read: edge, for those less versed) on every single product they sell. Its that dreaded "intangible" thing that Google makes too (that apparently isn't worth shite), except its called OSX, not Android.
etaa: Please note again, nothing "against" Apple here on my part (to keep using Scoop's words), just stating the facts of their operations (that they don't physically produce anything, they just assemble) and pointing out that Scoop's main argument "against" Google and "for" Apple actually applies to Apple as much as it does to Google. But again, I'm sure this will be construed as being some kind of mainstream-hating attack.

Great points. In my vast ignorance, I never looked at Apple that way.
I liked Google's move with Nexus One bc I felt like they didn't have much skin in the game if it failed. They didn't own manufacturing facilities or have a ton of risks. They appear extrasupervery similar now.

They are. US tech = software (or this abused verbiage of "intangible" in this thread). Apple, Google, Oracle, MS, Yahoo, fricking twitter and facebook, etc. Intel/AMD are the exceptions, not the rule. You would expect someone who is apparently so well-versed in their operations (0% chance Scoop has ever looked at their financials or could interpret them anyway, despite focusing on "revenues, growth, margins, whateverotherbullshit") to know these rather basic things. It must suck to have your entire argument turned around on you to prove, pretty much beyond a shadow of a doubt, that you are clueless on multiple levels.

I think "awesomeness" was the fundamental used.

quote:How much risk do you assign to Steve Jobs being able to continue as CEO? The last time he "retired" Apple damn near went bankrupt. Apple's board had to beg Jobs to return in order to save the company.
Scoop
What has changed since then?
Has he prepared the company to continue to grow without his leadership?
