re: Rent advice-NYC posters

You can save money in NYC if you want. It's actually easy.

1. Spend $104 on a monthly unlimited subway card (You take away car payement, insurance, and gas).
2. Buy all your food at Trader Joes (somewhat comparable prices to Wal-Mart).
3. Don't have fun, or if you do only do specials. The entire city is a string of bars, you can find deals (especially unlimited brunch drink specials) everywhere.
4. Don't punch guidos. (It's hard, really hard, but you can't fight up here. Everyone goes to jail and everyone's a lawyer.)

I save money by riding my bike anywhere I can go. I stay in shape, and it's free transportation. I also cook at home and bring my lunch nearly every day. I still go out 2-3 times a week though because what's the point of living in NY if you don't get to enjoy it?

I save the most though, by living in brooklyn. Manhattan is WAY overrated and it's just not a good fit for me.

I only follow steps 1 and 4. Most of my disposable income that isn't saved is spent on dates and drinks.

Negative, they're trying to build one somewhere but so far no dice.

They have a Target in Queens and Brooklyn.

How long does one have to work coming out of college with a decent degree (engg, finance etc.) to start making $150 to $250k in NWA?

If I knew anyone in Miami I would move there for like 2 years in fricking heartbeat. Douchebags are everywhere, but man, I'd probably have to have reconstructive surgery because my face would probably permanently be:

A person working in New York would reach 6 figures in salary much faster and that salary growth rate over their career will also be be much faster than someone working in NWA. Like the other person said, just because the cost of living is higher in New York doesn't mean $250k in NWA is worth the same as $650k in NY or whatever you said it was.

Online cost of living calculators are one of the worst predictors out there. I saw it first hand when I moved from TX to CA what a steaming pile of shite they all were. As an example, one of them said for someone that makes $90k in TX needs to make $150k in CA to maintain the same standard of living. Yeah right. Good luck convincing a new employer to give you a 66% raise just because you are moving from one state to another (especially if you are fairly young). I didn't even come close to getting the kind of raise that these calculators estimated, but my quality of life has gone up if anything. If you control your spending, the higher disposable income you have every month is just something you will never have if you live in a cheap state making a much lower salary.

i think moving to nwa the main savings would be your real estate. but throw in a benz and a tahoe and the insurance to get around and your right back where you started.
