Are you glad you have one or would you not get one if you had to do it again......Thinking about getting one next year....Have 2 kids 11 and 5 ......I think we would use it quite a bit...

I had one when I lived in Dallas...I liked the way it looked, but once I started having kids, I didn't use it as much. I don't have one in Houston, and avoided any house with a pool when we were looking, due to my young kids.

It wasn't a pain in the arse to maintain...pools these days aren't as bad as the pools from the 70's and 80's...

The only negative for me, now, is my small children, and the fact that it would take up my entire yard, leaving no room for much else.

With the heat down here, there are times I miss it, though.

Once my kids get older and get better at swimming and are more independent in the pool, I will entertain a pool again, assuming I can get a bigger yard.

It is definitely a luxury, not an investment. Do not think you will recoup your money if you have to sell. That said I do miss my pool from my previous house. It is not hard to maintain and if you like to entertain it is fantastic. If you have realy young kids who can't swim put up a security fence. I personally know 2 people who have had near drownings with backyard pools. That is not something I would want to experience. Spend the extra money for peace of mind.

My only experience was owning a home in Dallas in the late 80s. Keeping the pool up was a major headache. Pool service was expensive, and when I tried to do it myself, the water eventually got so cloudy I had to break down and bring back the pool service.

You will love it for several years while your kids are young. After about 10 or so years (maybe sooner) it won't be used as much (if at all) and the repairs start to add up (new pumps, new automatic pool cleaners, new multiport valve, replaster, etc). Then you will hate it.

It's not hard to take care of. I've had it for 12 years and I've always done it myself. I'm just sick of it. And sick of pouring money into it when it's not being used much anymore. One day in the not too distant future I will probably fill it in.

I just bought a house with a pool in the back. I can't wait to move in and enjoy it.

On a side note, I want to run the pool pump on a solar panel during the day. Does anybody know where to get one that could run it?

We enjoy ours as much for the water features as the pool itself. Nothing like the relaxing sound of flowing water, fountains etc. after a long day. The lighting is nice at night too. Reflects into the house and yard more than you'd think. In terms of kids, there's always the safety-liability aspect, but it's balanced by the fact that your place will be a draw for their friends and allow you to be a little more hands on as they go through their teen years.

. . . . and oh the parties you can throw for your fellow tigahs!

We built one in May. We're in the back yard all of the time now and the kids (3) play together more. A salt pool is easy, easy.

Our pool is in the center of our U-shaped house--we love it and use it everyday. Great for families.

I have 2 kids - when we had the pool built they were 3 & 5, they are now 5 & 7 and I cannot keep them out of the pool. They are in it everyday and it is great exercise.

Also, it is very nice to get done the yardwork and just jump in the pool when you are done.

Maintenence is not too bad - it will take you a few weeks to realize how quick the chlorine level can drop on really sunny days, but once you figure it out it is money very well spent

Thanks for all the responses....seems like most everybody likes it....a few of my friend have all pretty much said the same thing....the only negative talk I hear is from my father in law who had one back in the late 80's.....of course he waited until his oldest child was a senior in high school before they got one and pretty much bitched about all the work it took....most everybody with the salt water pools have said they are low maintence.....

We've had a pool with this house for about 7 years. Best way to get one is to buy a house with one--you basically get it for free.

If you keep up with it, maintenance is not a problem--run your pump/filter 24/7 and you will save a lot of work.

If you go vinyl liner, plan on replacing it ($4 grand installed) every 3-8 years. Gunnite is more durable but will run you several grand more to install.

We had one at our house when we were younger and it was fun for parties and everything but the upkeep sucked. My dad just installed a salt cholrinater in it and it's easier now but at least 2 or 3 times a month we get "I'm going get a truck of dirt and fill that son of a bitch in." And like somoen said earlier it's a luxury item not an investment. Remember that luxury COSTS!

You don't need a special pump to run the solar panels. Ours were on the roof and laid so that the bottom filled first. Once completely filled, the weight of the water UP matched the weight of the water DOWN as long as you had no leaks.
Use a timer and a manifold to control the temp. My manifold also ran my fountains and special jets.
Our yard was fenced and our kids knew the pool was off limits (like the burners of the stove) without adults.
Have fun.

Here in FL they can be an asset, but for most of the country there is no benefit and you can get one 'free', because not everyone wants it. Don't worry if it's not everything you want at first, because you can use the major maintenances for your upgrades and personalization (tile, color, bottom mural, lights, rock stream flowing in, etc.)

This is a big discussion at our house right now. We just bought 7 acres and plan on building in 1-2 years. Our kids are now 3 and 6 and in two years they should be old enough (oldest can swim fine now). I don't mind spending a little extra for luxury (ie. a fireplace outside is in our plans) but 40K is a lot of luxury.
