(In case you don't catch onto the sarcasm, it's totally douchey. I wouldn't do it. As an engineer, if I ever get my PE certification, I'd list that, but only because it's very commonplace for Professional Engineers to have that distinction at the end of their name on business cards.)
Yes, everyone puts PE for sure.
However, I have noticed some engineers putting their master degrees behind their names (i.e. Joe Statics, PE, MSCE). I've opted to not put my masters behind my name at the risk of perceived pretension.
Some may argue that you should only list credentials that are meaningful professional registrations like PE, PLS, CPA, etc. Things like MBA and MS are just highlighting your educational credentials and are not meaningful with regard to the professional services you are able to provide. And I can see that argument.
However, in my profession, people with PHDs seem to get a free pass from that. Anyone engineer who has a PHD almost certainly puts it on their title without hesitation, even though it is meaningless in a professional sense. So maybe some people with the MS rationalize that they can do the same thing.

I don't list PE or especially MBA. Somebody used EI, which to me was hilarious and much worse than MBA.
Everybody I know uses EI before they get the PE. What's wrong with that? It is a professional certification.

PhD's are okay because they could just choose to go by dr, which is more pretentious. I don't think anyone would call me master flask.

Non pinnacle designations always seem dumb, I guess that's why I think putting MBA is dumb and pretentious.

quote:How is the Engineer Intern (EI) considered a legit professional certification? The basic requirements are getting your degree and passing an academic FE exam while you are still in school. It means you are working towards a professional credential (PE) but does not represent any practical skill or accomplishment on its own. Thus it falls in the academic category (resume), not professional category, at least in my opinion.

The difference is that there are quite a few people that have graduated, but not passed the FE. An EI designation differentiates you from them.
I will not be putting EI on my cards, but I understand those that do. It is not entirely academic.

It may be marginal, but why push it? What is there to gain?

For a perspective employer or contractor, it makes a difference to know that the worker was passed the Fundamentals Exam that's needed for licensure. It's not quite as generic as MBA.
But like I said, my cards won't say that.

I remember Dr. Richard White mentioning during Organizational Behavior MBA class at LSU that in Louisiana "No one gives out or cares about business cards"
Apparently they matter outside of Louisiana.

That may be more true than you'd think, at least on the surface. Louisiana is full if right knit communities, even its biggest city its the type if place where everybody knows everybody. Not the case in most other places, or "not as true."

Interesting topic. . . I'm a current B School student in NC (LSU undergrad) and I agree that it would be poor form to put it on my business cards after graduating.
However, obtaining and distributing business cards are very important during school for networking, internships, and ultimately, job offers.
PS I miss the food!

The only time I've seen someone put it on a business card was a guy that was on the other side of a litigation case, and I'm pretty sure he did it because he was 35+ working in an accounting firm without passing the cpa. His analysis was also almost comically bad, which was surprising given that he worked at one of the bigger local firms in nola. Granted, I've only been working for a year and a half, but when I saw the thread topic, this was the first thing that came to mind.

CPA, CFA, MD, Phd etc i don't have a problem with. MBA is attention whorish.

I hired a new employee last month; had to have biz cards made. Her former employer MADE her put MBA on her card. She hated it, thought it was ridiculous and pretentious.
Ironically, making her do stuff like the above that she didn't agree with was one reason she left her former employer.

It is a professional certification offered by LAPELS.

It is an accomplishment. It clarifies that you have an engineering background, passed the FE, and are working towards the PE.

In my field, I would assume anyone who doesn't put EI behind their name has not passed the FE.
Also, I believer it helps give you credence when directing engineering decisions to contractors, owners, etc.

That sounds legit then. I don't know much abOut engineering.

quote:PE, yes. EI, no. Perhaps my opinion is in the minority, or it is industry specific. Either way, congrats on passing the FE and best of luck in your career. Put it on your card if it feels right for your situation.

The rule I've always lived by is that "giving out business cards is a waste of paper" however, "when someone ASKS for your business card, that's as good as GOLD!!"
