Doesn't it take a few days for the money to officially transfer? You may have contacted the person before your money was even in their account?

So you set your eBay sale at like johnsmith2@gmail.com instead of johnsmith12@gmail.com? Then you emailed johnsmith2 to discuss the problem?

This is my concern. He said he would be happy to send it to the correct account, he just had some questions for PayPal.

PayPal received the email and they have no clue who is supposed to read/respond to those questions and when they would do so.

Completely inept.

This is correct, and they have the money already. Not sure if it's in their PayPal account or they have already transferred it to their bank.

Have you shipped the item yet?

Have you notified the buyer of the issue?

I feel like this isn't the first time in the history of paypal/ebay that something like this occured

It's not and he needs to stay on top of PayPal. I disagree about being patient. It's a pita but he needs to call at least daily until it is taken care of.

They have fine print in which they can take back any money they fund if it's given inappropriately. The OP should clearly be able to show that his PayPal account is different then the one that the money was sent to.

Yes, already shipped, I know I'm an idiot. It was supposed to go to my wife's PayPal but my Ebay.

I got the notification that the payment had been received from Ebay, and then I shipped it.

I did let the buyer know what was going on and asked if they would be willing to dispute the charge. Not ideal since they would then have the item and the money.

Definitely not the first time, there are several stories of people getting screwed hard by PayPal in this scenario.

This is my thinking exactly.

I made the typo on the listing itself and didn't notice it until it was too late.

Then PayPal didn't suck at all - they did exactly what you told them to do. Best of luck.

They don't suck for my mistake, they suck for their customer service and inability to rectify the mistake.

you need to go to ebay. payment had not been received, this email was deceptive. they should cover this and buyer should be trying to get their $ back from paypal guy.

i sent $50 to the wrong person once. they just kept it and never responded. paypal didn't do jack. just called it lesson learned.

I got in contact with the buyer. They are doing a credit card claim and getting a refund. Then sending me the money. There are still some good folks out there!

Glad that worked out. When I read that you had already shipped it, I immediately thought "oops".

Give clear and correct instructions to start with. Looks like Paypal is bending over backwards to help you out.

You may use this as leverage against your wrong-email@gmail friend. I'd tell them that you got a hold of your buyer and then are requesting a refund through Paypal.

That may give them a kick in the arse to just send you the money and make it a quicker process.

ETA: I wouldn't count your chickens before they hatch here either, stay on top of everyone until its settled completely.

I am assuming you did not read the whole thread, payment was made, payment was recieved, claiming otherwise will get him booted from both PayPal and Ebay.

OP made a mistake that will be rectified, he just needs to be a bit more patient, this was his mistake and not everyone has it as top priority to resolve, they have to deal with last weeks dipshits first and so on.

OP I would be careful with this charge dispute, it may blow up in both yours and the buyers faces, give it time to be resolved properly.

I had received no further communication from the person who accidentally received the funds, until a refund was issued to the buyer.

He then sends an email to me all pissed that PayPal took the funds without his knowledge.

I believe he had every intention of keeping the money.

I have a small business dealing with credit card transactions routinely. I used to use PayPal every now and then as a back up.

There's no reason to be patient. PayPal takes their time because they suck, but that's not the way it should be.

I have customers double pay all the time. One email with the extra charge information included to my customer support person and they refund the money or cancel the transaction before it officially goes through instantly.

Now I know this situation was a little more complicated, but it's really a simple thing for a low end customer service service person to handle with common sense.
