Long story short, sold something on Ebay, it went to the incorrect PayPal account due to a typo.

The incorrect account is a real PayPal account, I have emailed this person and they said they would be glad to return the money to me once PayPal verifies this isn't a scam.

PayPal has sent 2 official notices telling the person to return the money, they will do nothing more.

I have emailed the incorrect recipient with my contact information, they have not responded since the original "I will return it once PayPal verifies."

This started Monday night, my thinking is give them the rest of the week and then have a lawyer send something? I have all of this persons information. Name, address, phone number, etc.

What options do I have.

ETA: It's $600 if that matters.

Since Monday night... Paypal has sent two notices and you have talked to the person?

It's Wednesday morning... it's been 36 hours. Yes... I would give it at least until the end of the week.

What legal recourse do you have here? I'm curious what an attorney would say here.

I'm assuming the typo was your error?

Did you buy something or get paid? So you put the wrong account number in and your money was sent to the wrong account?

What is the other party doing that was supposed to receive/ or sent the money?

I haven't used my PayPal account in like a year or so, do they not have 2-3 methods of verification? It's not like you just put your account number in once right? I mean your name and whatever has to match also?

Nope, it's just email address, and yes the typo was my fault but there is no verification.

I've given them everything they need to show that the person that received the money did so in error, and the sale of the Ebay item was not associated with them.

I'm the seller in this scenario.

Nah, it's pretty easy to screw up. You put in the email address and hit "send". I don't think name matching comes into play at all. I'm curious, did the OP have the funds coming from a credit card? If so, I'd pursue it that way. If not.....oops?

exercise a little more patience. The other person is covering their arse as well, just think if you were them and this happened.

I did not send any money.

Buyer buys item from me
Pays for item to incorrect account
I have received nothing
All effort has been to get the person who incorrectly received the money to send the money to the correct place.

Okay. The fact you said it was YOUR typo had me confused. I'm assuming that you made the typo when telling the buyer where to send the money? That's interesting since eBay usually will send the buyer an invoice with the Paypal email already correctly linked so you never have to send that info yourself.

Complicated situation. Hope you get it worked out.

Correct, I made the typo on the listing. The buyer never sees the PayPal account as it is all handled through Ebay.

I made the typo on the listing itself and didn't notice it until it was too late.

I know it's only been 3 days, and I'm not trying to rush the hell out of it, I just wanted to know my options.

If it's easy to do that's weak and PayPal damn well knows it's s problem. Did you ship it yet? I wouldn't ship it until PayPal fixes it. That will get the buyer involved.

I'll assume he did not. I never ship a thing until I have money confirmed in MY BANK ACCOUNT.

That said, the buyer didn't do anything wrong here and may raise a stink. Have you spoken with the buyer to address this? If he/she can get the transaction reversed or reimbursed, they can just initiate a new transaction to you and be done with it.

Oh I agree it sucks for the buyer, but two people affected is likely to get a speedier response.

Paypal in my experience is a PITA to deal with. They set up 'firm' policies to benefit themselves and then pick and choose when they are obeyed to their liking.

Worst customer service I've ever dealt with. Makes AT&T look amazing.

I guess getting the buyer to dispute the payment is the next course of action, I'll probably still give this guy till the end of the week.

I wouldn't get a lawyer involved, I'd think it would take $1000s to deal with someone like PayPal. Their legal team will laugh at your lawyer over a $600 item.

Could you cancel the order and give the buyer a refund? I assume it will come from the same paypal account as payment made to if the incorrect paypal address is still associated with your account. May want to check with paypal to ensure this is how it will work upon cancellation. Then have the buyer repurchase after you correct the account.

PayPal has made it very clear this is not their problem, they don't give a shite. Legal action would have to be against the person directly not PayPal.

I get why the person who received the $600 could think it's a scam...but I mean, what other option is there for $600 to just show up in your paypal account?

The fact that they are stalling makes me think they just want to keep the money and say screw you

You need to just chill a bit, give it a few days.

Your bum rush makes it seem even scammier.
