I'm going to dip my toes in at some point despite thinking it is really dumb

I didn't see on the OP - I went to Solanart, do I connect my wallet to that site? Does it require a certain wallet or can you do something like a Coinbase Pro wallet that holds SOL?

I go coinbase pro-> phantom wallet
you connect your phantom wallet to minting websites or secondary marketplace. solanart is most popular right now on sol but it's all new so that could change

would you rather hold 10000 dogecoins or a digital ape jpeg that you can show off to your friends and put all over social media and make memes out of?

I do both. but I'm hodling the projects I believe have a long term future. if you check the price of eth punks, that is the max future potential.
art is all subjective tho so it's hard for me to give a hard suggestion. a lot people love the llamas, some people prob think they're dumb and prefer badgers etc

no. drops are on the websites of each project
