So, due to some crazy circumstance, I did not file 2019 taxes until MAY 26 of this year. Finally got them completed and mailed to Austin and they were received on 6/1/21. (Due a refund for the curious)

I'm trying to turn in the 2020 taxes and e0file requires AGI from 2019. E-file keeps failing on the AGI, I'm assuming because processing of the 2019 hasn't completed yet.

I've called the IRS 6-7 times this week (at least once daily) and when I get through the prompts the answering machine always ends with "due to high volume we can't answer right now, call later or tomorrow).

My questions are:

1- How do I confirm they actually have the 2019 returns? The certified receipt just means someone at the PO Box got it.

2- Is 8 weeks semi-normal to input the data? Are they even dealing with 2019 stuff now?

3- Any guestimates on how long it might take?

I'm trying to decide to I keep attempting e-file for the 2020 or print and mail them in.

TIA and here's a sexy librarian youtube (semi-sfw?) for your troubles...

For a while during COVID they weren't even opening up mail which caused them to get back logged big time. Last I had heard they were 6-8 months behind on opening mail. This was a while ago and IDK how much they have caught up but I can't imagine very far.

You can check your refund status at IRS.gov and see if it pops anything up.

I'd mail it in certified if I were you.

Might as well print & mail, I've been waiting on a tax transcript for almost 3 months now.

Thanks - these answers are exactly what I needed.

Wish there was a way to e-file without that AGI.

Just a shot in the dark -- but did you try entering $0 as your AGI? I think I was in a similar situation last year and had to enter $0 in order to get past that step.

Yes that was one of the suggestions.

Tried with 2019 AGI and $0.

Try using your 2018 AGI.

So, pulled this up and was prepared to do it. On a whim, I let TurboTax "correct" the rejected e-file, which TurboTax says is simply replacing the 2019 AGI with "0". (previously I had manually typed in "0", which was rejected).

AND this time, viola! Return accepted.

Thanks all for the suggestions.

I'm thinking 1 of 2 things happened on my previous "0" attempt:

1- IRS system was down/degraded such that it was rejecting for any reason, OR

2- While I had typed "0", maybe I should have typed 0.00 or something along those lines... a formatting error as such. Allowing TurboTax to do the "0" for me supplied it in a manner the IRS system was accepting.

Further thoughts:

OR,

3- There was some other error that TurboTax was NOT pointing out (the reject reasons specifically called out the AGI as the problem) and when I allowed TurboTax to correct it, it fixed that/those too, OR

4- Maybe my 2019 was received and system flag or something allowed it go go through, because a state of ACCEPTED/NOT PROCESSED might allow a "0" entry to work.

OR

5- Who the hell knows.

And finally, moral of the story is... the IRS ain't answering their phones, you are on your own.

All I can tell you is keep calling if you want but it probably hasn’t been processed yet. I called about a return mailed in on 5/11 and it was not in the system yet. The agent said they are severely backed up, they aren’t back in their office yet.

Almost 3 months and still nothing??

I'm awaiting a late refund from a June mail-in date.

There have been several reports that the IRS is extremely late with processing all returns. However, they are particular late with non-2020 returns. I filed an amended return in January and they still haven't gotten around to it. I'm being told to be patient that they'll get to it.
