Joint checking here. Mostly groceries, eating out, gas, mortgage, electric/cellphone/cable monthly type bills etc. which I consider joint expenses.
Never had an issues regarding discretionary spending with the wife. Is your wife racking up 1k/month plus at the mall or something?

Me 25% Her 75%.
Still cheaper than divorce. I spend money on whatever I want, but she she just spends money.

Joint acct for bills. She spends 60-80% of her acct from month to month check. Im more of 5-10%, put $ in savings/401k/investment. Dont ask about my MIL and the crazy amount of debt she/her husband is GAINiNG after RETIRING.

Pretty close to even if I had to guess, but never crunched the numbers. She drives a lot more for work, so spends more on gas and lunches out(I bring my lunch to work 90% of the time), but I have a few hobbies that I spend on that even that out.
She does have a ton of vacation/comp time built up and takes a bunch of long weekend trips that likely pushes her over the top. But she usually takes our kids with her so I don't look at it as her spending.

75%(her) 25%(me)- but she does by 90% of items needed for the household/child

She spends more but it's because I tell her to. I like good groceries.

This is why you should have a joint checking for bills/groceries and put the rest in separate checking accounts. Then she can spend as much as you want and I can save as much as I want.
To answer your question, my wife's credit card bill is usually $1000+, where mine is usually between $400-$500

What do you do if you save way more than her and are able to retire way earlier than her/live more lavishly in retirement? Do you think that would breed some problems or no? Obviously everyone knows their own situation, just curious.

My wife and I both have money going directly into 401(k)s each pay period. She makes more than I do so its not a real issue at this point. It sounds like they have different spending habits that have the potential to cause problems and that could be fixed with separate spending accounts.
I would assume that before he would retire, he would take into consideration the financial stability of the entire household. Or he could just be an a-hole and eat ribeyes while she eats ham sandwiches
. But that's a bold strategy.

Over the last 10 years, it has been probably 60% her / 40% me. I amped up my spending two years ago, but it has trailed off.
We tried tracking personal expenses and do a budget for what each of us spends. It was an epic fail, as she refused to enter anything. So I did it, then she complained about it.
we plan to early retire in the next couple of years, so we will need to figure it out. She spends like $250/month on hair shite.
