For Fall AP2, what is the better class, FIN 701 with Vines or with Shi? I will also take FIN 730.

So far I am treading water with an A and a B in ECON 705 and Acct 701.

Not familiar with Fin 705. Do you mean FIN 720? If so, then you'll be fine in FIN 701 with Vines. 720's first module is basically the entire 701 curriculum with the exception of calculating WACC, which is in Mod 2 of 720, and the DuPont analysis.

Hi everyone!

I just came across this board and wished that I had been a part of it during my time in the program. I'm taking two classes this term, and two next term, and I should be done!

I'm enrolled in Koksal's class for MKT701 and it's a bit intimidating. Does anyone have any advise on successfully making it through this course? I'm striving for an A but I'll honestly take a B at this point.

Also, I have Jia Yu next term. Has anyone taken her yet? I can't find any reviews for her class.

Got ya. I took Vines and it was fine. He's a very forgiving grader. The class is based on 4 modules and a word document he wrote himself. The word document can be confusing at times but there is a discussion board for random questions so you'll likely find multiple classmates tripped-up on the same concepts. He does weekly zoom sessions and didn't use a proctor which was nice. I'm not the strongest finance student and got an easy B.

ive found Gibbs very easy, but ill agree just a tiny bit more time involved than what my initial impression was going in
2 chapters a week, do one chapter at a time... i actually answer the weekly questions first by cntrl+F'ing through the chapter, then I do a fast read of the chapter, then quickly do the quiz with the reading fresh on my mind. rinse and repeat for the next chapter.
yes the quizzes can sometimes ask a very precise and irrelevant detail but its multiple choice and many times there is only one option that was even a term that was brought up in the chapter... and then you literally would have to go out your way to not get 100% on all the other non-quiz stuff

The instructions on what the professor/coach is actually looking for are unclear IMO. You don't really know what's right until you get feedback. There also aren't a lot of assignments in the class. Two exams, 3 case studies, and 2 discussions. I actually would have preferred to take an exam every week instead of trying to retain every detail for an exam with 3 weeks of content.

I hope to pull off at least a B in the class, but we're in week 4 and we've only had two assignments, and only one of the grades have been posted. So we'll see.

Hey Champ -- Does Koksal require group work in MKT701? Frankly id rather have more tests than have to work with others...

Guys, i'm new to the online MBA program and potentially starting this fall. I have a pretty demanding full time job, but want to try to take 2 classes a session. I'm trying to pair up my weakest area (anything with math) with potentially my strengths (IT and reading/writing). Looking at FIN 701 and ISDS 705 to start. Can you please let me know what you think? TIA

txrd, who is your FIN 701 and ISDS 705 with?

I had Choi for FIN and Darban for ISDS and they’d be a fine pairing.

Hey Tx -- ISDS705 is a good first class. Fin 701 is open note/closed book, so as long as you take good notes and bring the formulas to the test, you'll do just fine. The math involved isn't that bad at all.

Hi txrd, on ISDS, TD consensus seems to be that it's a garbage class that people just take for an easy A with Gibbs or Lin as the easiest professors. Just a heads up- Darban's ISDS course took me about as much time weekly as most of my other courses, so don't count on it being a total breeze. That said, I am really happy I took it my first term and I learned a LOT. I don't have a business background and this class helped me gain a solid foundation about business principles including competitive advantage, Porter's Five Forces, switching costs, value chain, vertical integration, and more (those are just the ones that come to mind). IMO, Darban provides a good class that's actually kind of fun if your group doesn't suck (mine was great). Through the group project, I met some great people and made some friends I've kept in contact with ever since as I've continued in the program. To me, this course is worth the extra time (as compared to other ISDS professors) if you're taking it first up because it's a good intro to MBA principles.

It sounds like Shi is a good bet for FIN, esp. if Rybo gives his endorsement. You mentioned you are not strong with math, so I just thought I'd let you know another option- if Choi is available, you can fail every exam and get a B in the class because of the way the weekly discussions (200 words + respond to 1 classmate) and two case studies (500 words) are graded. I am not familiar with Shi's structure, so it may be the same.

Such garbage. The students and professors know it. I would be curious how Darban was able to make it meaningful.

Quintus, haha good question. I just re-skimmed over Darban’s slides and realized they’re still better than at least 3 of the 6 classes I’ve taken. Shoot me an email (kikicub7 at gmail.com) and I’ll send them your way if you’re actually interested in taking a peek. I thought the textbook was pretty good (2011)- it discussed things like the rise of Bill Gates, Netflix, and actual modern day examples of BIS like how Zara used it in their vertical integration to get way ahead. I thought the content was actually pretty interesting and it’s still the only class I’ve taken to date that has discussed/introduced a lot of the critical business frameworks/theories from the likes of Porter, Argyris & co.

Hi kikicub - thanks for the reply. just to clarify, ISDS705 is the MIS class. is that the one you're referring to as well? If that's not it, which class did you learn about value chain/vertical integration etc? I'm really interested in those topics as well.
I really appreciate you sharing your experience. Thanks!
