Inspired by Russian's CenturyTel thread, which Louisiana stock(s) do you like and why? Thought it might be fun to not only discuss some of these and perhaps find some good investments but also to raise awareness regarding local publicly traded companies.

I'd start us off but am currently invested in none. I've been in and out of Shaw and Tidewater but neither recently. Thus, I haven't kept up w/ their development.

I've received a tip on Cheniere but have yet to look into it.

I bought Stone Energy (SGY) at $3.35

I like it because I have a 450% gain.

I've followed it for a while. My dad bought in at about a dollar. I gave him the sell signal at 5, but I don't know if he followed it or not.

Wow. Nice one there. I feel like there are dozens of these small oil companies from Lafayette who are traded publicly.

You should become the official Lafayette stock guru. I'm actually being somewhat serious.

I actually don't know about it because of the lafayette connection, but rather because my parents own a camp on big lake in Hackberry about 3 miles away from one of their LNG ports. It is one of the most impressive things I have ever seen.

BTW, what was the tip on LNG?

I've been following it for a while and I've never really loved it. Outside of the buyout run up I never really saw any news that made me feel really good about it, which is why I told my dad to sell.

He's more of a sentimental holder though.

I love that place. What's the name of the watering hole there? The owner is named "Blue" and is straight from the 1800s.

It appears there's been some confusion on my end (and I think the person who gave me the tip as well). Whenever you posted the symbol, "LNG" it struck me by surprise.

My friend is in that business and told me he was expecting big things from Cheniere, a company he said had operations in Lafayette. However, the ticker he sent me was CQP, which appears to be based out of Houston.

CQP = Cheniere Energy Partners

LNG = Cheniere Energy

Are they not related?

CQP Company Overview from ETrade:

quote:

Cheniere Energy Partners, L.P. (Cheniere Partners) is a limited partnership, through its wholly owned subsidiary, Sabine Pass LNG, L.P. (Sabine Pass LNG), owns and operates the Sabine Pass LNG receiving terminal located in western Cameron Parish, Louisiana on the Sabine Pass Channel. During the year ended December 31, 2009, Sabine Pass LNG purchased Sabine Pass Tug Services, LLC (Tug Services), a wholly owned subsidiary of Cheniere Energy, Inc. (Cheniere). As of December 31, 2009, Cheniere owned 90.6% of Cheniere Partners through its wholly owned subsidiaries, Cheniere LNG Holdings, LLC (Holdings), Cheniere Common Units Holdings, LLC, Cheniere Subsidiary Holdings, LLC (Subsidiary Holdings) and Cheniere Energy Partners GP, LLC (the General Partner).

LNG Company Overview from ETrade:

quote:

Cheniere Energy, Inc. (Cheniere) is an energy company primarily engaged in liquefied natural gas (LNG)-related businesses. The Company owns and operates the Sabine Pass LNG receiving terminal in Louisiana through its 90.6% ownership interest in and management agreements with Cheniere Energy Partners, L.P. (Cheniere Partners). It also owns and operates the Creole Trail Pipeline, which interconnects the Sabine Pass LNG receiving terminal with downstream markets. One of its subsidiaries, Cheniere Marketing, LLC (Cheniere Marketing), is marketing LNG and natural gas. It owns 30% of the limited partnership interests of Freeport LNG Development, L.P. (Freeport LNG), which operates the Freeport LNG receiving terminal. In addition, it is engaged to a limited extent in oil and natural gas exploration and development activities in the Gulf of Mexico. The Company operates in three segments: LNG receiving terminal business; natural gas pipeline business, and LNG and natural gas marketing business.

Each is also linked to identical press releases. Hrmmm

That little trailer of a bar? I can't think of the name. In an area like that, it's just called "the bar".

Haha, never met him. Might have to stop in some time to check it out.

I never knew Piccadilly was a LA company. From their website:

quote:

T.H. Hamilton opened the first Piccadilly Cafeteria in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in 1944.

I still won't eat there though.

Thanks for this list. I'm going to begin digging in to some of these for our MT Hedge Fund. Anyone else feel free to help. Eventually we could have a profile on each one perhaps.

Their corporate office is off of Sherwood. I once considered eating there because I thought it was the nicest Picadilly in the entire world.

I would say they were the closely related based on descriptions, but those two stocks act very differently. I'm at a research conference right now so I can't get too into looking stuff up or someone will notice.
