How do you think the market reacts to a “for cause” termination of Powell? Might happen sooner than later.

EDIT: And long-term bond yields would soar.

I’m trying to understand what is accomplished by firing Powell. The entire board votes on rates, right?
What influence does Powell have over them?
Even if the next guy is 100% wanting to set negative rates or whatever, he can’t do shite unless the board votes with him, right?
Can the chair influence board composition in anyway?

The president wasnt introducing tariffs at random week over week. Not sure how you can forget about that. This is exactly why he isnt cutting right now and has stated as such over and over. Stop ignoring the obvious.

quote:The committee that votes on interest rates is called the "Federal Open Market Committee, or FOMC. Each member of the FOMC gets a vote on determining the target rate for federal funds which are the overnight lending of funds between commercial banks.
The entire board votes on rates, right?
quote:Traditionally the FOMC tries really hard to not overrule the chair which would create uncertainty in the financial markets.
What influence does Powell have over them?
quote:If by "board" you mean the FOMC then, yes, you are correct.
Even if the next guy is 100% wanting to set negative rates or whatever, he can’t do shite unless the board votes with him, right?
quote:Again if by "board" you mean the FOMC, here is the selection elgibility process for committee members.
Can the chair influence board composition in anyway?
quote:LINK
The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) consists of twelve members--the seven members of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System; the president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York; and four of the remaining eleven Reserve Bank presidents, who serve one-year terms on a rotating basis. The rotating seats are filled from the following four groups of Banks, one Bank president from each group: Boston, Philadelphia, and Richmond; Cleveland and Chicago; Atlanta, St. Louis, and Dallas; and Minneapolis, Kansas City, and San Francisco. Nonvoting Reserve Bank presidents attend the meetings of the Committee, participate in the discussions, and contribute to the Committee's assessment of the economy and policy options.
So that creates the question of how are the Fed's Board of Governors selected?
quote:
The Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, commonly known as the Federal Reserve Board, is the main governing body of the Federal Reserve System. It is charged with overseeing the Federal Reserve Banks and with helping implement the monetary policy of the United States. Governors are appointed by the president of the United States and confirmed by the Senate for staggered 14-year terms.

Yes. Thank you. I’m ignorant as to all the specifics (hence why I keep calling them the “board”
)
So, really there’s nothing other than precedent of not wanting to override the chair? I guess Trump hopes to wield that pressure by appointing a chair that wants a bunch of cuts, but the board could still ignore him.

Powell will also serve a member of the Board of Governors until 1/28.

quote:Good point. I'm not sure if Powell resigns as Chairman does that mean he also resigns from the Board?

I don't care enough about it to look it up.

My understanding is, it's common practice that when a chairman's term is over he also resigns his sseat as a governor but, I don't think it's required.
