Garage sales are another good place to look for scrap silver/gold. Lots of "costume" jewelry gets dumped into boxes, and very often tarnished sterling silver is mixed in with the crap. Sometimes gold, too. Get a jeweler's loup and learn what the various hallmarks are. (You often see non-us produced silver with some different marks)

It's pretty tuff to find 1oz coins for anything close to a reasonable price right now. I've been buying stamped silver serving pieces at garage sales and it is worthwhile. That too will probably dry up.

Apmex had Royal Canadian sweepstake if you buy you are entered to win 500 oz

I still couldn't pull trigger at $32 an oz

It depends .... how much of a premium-over-spot price do you want to pay?

I wouldn't ... spot at $27 .... the only silver I would consider purchasing for $30 might be ASE's.

In March, physical silver could be purchased at around $12.85, including premium of $.39/oz and the GSR was at 124: 1. Those deals are gone and the inventory for physical silver is extremely tight and hard to find nowadays.

Silver is now at $27/oz and the GSR is at 76:1 ....very favorable for silver holders, especially those that were in acquisition-mode for the past few years.

When GSR hits 50:10 (or better), it will be time to swap silver holdings for gold. This is an ideal way to accumulate gold, if you have patience. (Buy silver when GSR is high, swap Silver for Gold when GSR is low)

Yes, but small quantities aren't worth the effort and fees. If you can regularly acquire metals at garage sales or auctions, and send to the smelter in batches, it might be worth it. Obviously , these are going to be silver items of varying purities, which will be extracted and refined into ingots of 99%+ purity, so it takes a lot of sterling or plate to make it worthwhile, IMO.

IMO, there is no downside to collecting pre-'64 coinage. Each $1 of face-value silver coinage is currently worth $21.30 ... and this price fluctuates with the change in Spot price. This si commonly referred to as "junk silver" and has a 90% silver content. Morgan silver dollars are also 90%, but have a completely different pricing structure due to their numismatic value among collectors.

ASE's are .999 pure silver
Silver Maples are .9999 pure silver

I know I'm missing some good stuff that's not stamped, but I'm too afraid of plated stuff.

If you're buying cheap stuff, then a few mistakes don't matter. I usually sell scrap to a buyer that uses the fancy handheld x-ray spectrometer...it will tell the diff between real and plated.

My father in law used to advise buying the ugliest, heaviest rings. He was often correct: the ugly ones get overlooked, and gold is heavy (duh). Esp womens jewelry was often quite awful and ornate, with cheap stones, and the inheritors of said jewelry often do not realize that it is gold.

IMO, it is a better time to buy gold than silver.

Paper gold - GLD
Physical gold - Apmex.com

Almost no one is selling physical gold. The ones who are want hyper inflated prices. Silver is still available but the premiums appear to be 15-20% over spot.

Seems like wrong time to keep making small buys

Lower premiums on gold than silver atm for most pieces. Even a 1/10 oz gold has a lower premium than most silver choices.
