re: Is collecting silver worth the time?
I’ve collected rare silver coins since I was 7 and have quite a collection safely stored in a separate location off my property (I used to live very close to the elderly Gonzales couple who was brutally murdered over their coin collection a few years back and that convinced me to store mine away from home). I am not 100% sure what it’s worth today but it’s significant. I know if I were to have it appraised that I would have no doubt I’d be glad I “invested” in that silver.

re: Is collecting silver worth the time?
my grandfather owned a grocery store from the 60’s to the 90’s. He left all the grandchildren each a big bag of silver quarters that he’d collected over the decades. Mine weighs about 30 pounds (about 600 dollars in currency) or about 2400 quarters.

I think the conversion is 6 quarters equals a Troy ounce. So my bag is about 400 ounces. One day I might sell it but it has sentimental value to me

5.5, to be exact. Still, at 400 ounces you’ve got quite a collection. Do you have any young children? I know it’s sentimental to you but I’m sure your grandfather would love to have been able to contribute $12,000 to your children’s’ education or simply an account to help with the purchase of their home(s). Selling them probably wouldn’t feel as bad if you give the funds to your children.

Just a thought.

It's pretty tuff to find 1oz coins for anything close to a reasonable price right now. I've been buying stamped silver serving pieces at garage sales and it is worthwhile. That too will probably dry up.
