Not much to know... You'll be an instrument tech. You'll calibrate control systems, run wiring, pm equipment, etc. not a bad gig but you'll be outside a lot in a plant. Not many people are cut out for shift work in a plant

I do. I work on robots too. I work the 2-2-3-2 shift schedule now. It's 12 hrs. Days and nights.

Instrument techs generally calibrate and repair transmitters, controllers, analyzers and program logic systems. I went to school for instrumentation but have been in ops since finishing school. Our techs work 4-10's, Monday through Friday, as do most plants. We have two techs that follow the shift schedule but only work the day rotations. Pay will be from mid to upper $30's. Good job overall, nothing strenuous but you will have to work in the elements from time to time.

I know of some that were hired with our last pipe fitter class just over a year ago. Most have been hired as "experienced hires" who come in as 4th year apprentices with 1 year of probation before becoming journeymen instrument techs.

do you want to work alot? the company I work for is hiring a senior tech. we mostly do the electronic side but also do a little instrumentation. Our techs jump around the gulf a little bit and also do some work in west texas. You would have to live in the lafayette area though.
