Yeah I’m not getting much traction with any of them either. I can’t even get them to budge on the BS “care package” they added to the price much less the overall price
TD is full of non-realistic anecdotes, so I have a hard time believing dealers will give an actual OOTD price to an email inquiry. I’m sure some will, mostly the mega-dealers in large cities that do a lot of volume. But, I bought my last three vehicles within the last 3 years when dealers could name their price so maybe it’s different now.
If I were shopping now, I would find a list of similar vehicles within a 50 to 100 mile range. Try to see them in person, then start negotiating. Also don’t tell them how you intend to pay. If you do, and are paying cash, don’t think that will entitle you to a better deal. They want you to finance. If you do finance, let the finance manager run down his list of warranty packages that are tied to interest rates and stop him when he gets to the lowest rate. Tell him you’ll take that rate and none of the warranties and if he refuses then that’s illegal.

I found a truck I like at a local dealer and found the identical model with similar mileage 3 hours away for a couple grand less. I asked them to match that price and they pretty much told me to enjoy my drive

That’s typically been my experience too.

I'm in the market for a new car

Need you to copy and paste your buying tips for me.
The guy my friends and I use is ~$500. Over the course of I think 6 purchases we've commissioned, he's saved on average something like $7500 per vehicle - all while minimizing effort from us, the buyer.
The process - he gives you a pretty long questionaire to dial in your must haves vs your nice to haves. He then gives you a list of 3-7 makes/models that would fit the bill and directs you to go test drive them all.
You then get back to him with one (or more) picks that you would buy if you could get the right deal.
He then searches whichever geography you give him to find the single best fit vs price. He'll send you a spreadsheet with 5-10 that he's found (depending on your search, it could be more or less).
If you tell him to pull the trigger, he goes directly to the dealership and negotiates it all. The only thing you have to do is walk in, say "I'm the buyer that Mr. X pre-negotiated the purchase for", sign the papers, and then leave.
If trade ins are applicable, he makes sure that is handled too.
This is for new or used.
I will never do it another way again. On my most recent purchase, I think he saved me about $10K (not to mention all the effort). Another family member wanted a relatively hard to find BMW. It took awhile, but he did find one and probably $8K less. We're not sure we would have even found it in the first place.

How true is this?
Went over the weekend to look at some Grand Highlanders. Nothing on the lot at two locations...only one Highlander.
Seems like the way of buying cars, these days, is building or having the dealership re-direct a vehicle to their location.

Bought my wife a grand highlander last year and we had the same issue with finding one. It didn’t help that her vehicle was totaled and we needed something asap.

Not on the price. We got them to remove some of the itemized crap they add on but it wasn’t much.

That’s just buying Toyota in general, especially SUV’s. They are in high demand and hold resale well. Toyota tends to not negotiate and not have good financing rates through their credit bureau.

Yeah, I figured as much with Toyota or Honda.
Hopefully they move on some of their transportation/ admin fees.

I had to take my 4Runner to the dealership last week, and they tried not to let me leave without selling it back to them. I was thinking of buying new at the end of this year, but I don't think I'm going with the new 4Runner after driving 4Runners since 2006.

I just inquired about a Toyota being sold used at a Honda dealership. I sent a lower offer trying to see where they would come in. They didn’t even counter when the salesperson had told me earlier that the price was negotiable. I asked why they won’t counter and the sales manager basically jumped in the text and told me to go frick myself. I guess there’s still lots of dumb money floating around and they can just sit back and name their prices.

Keep your 5th gen. We bought an SR5 Premium in 2022 and plan to keep it for a long time. The new ones are very nice, but I think the 5th gen’s will be looked back on as the best of the best.

We bought a 24 expedition max last year. My family and couple friends families have used the same sales guy for the last 20 years or so. He does majority fleet sales with a personal sale thrown in. But yeah I send him a link to what I want, told him my price (a reasonable market based), and he sent me back a full OTD quote with everything included at that price.
All that to say, ask some friends and family for a connection to a similar relationship. May save you some hassle in the long run.

That sounds amazing. Where can I find this guy or someone who does this?

EDIT: It's sad when dealerships have made the process so tortuous that they're losing profit to a middleman.
EDIT2: Authority Auto
