Thanks for the advice all, I'd never thought of giving plasma. I think I found a place in BR that pays $20 the first time in a week and $30 the second - $50 a week is $2600 a year. That's close enough.

Has anyone here actually given plasma before? Is it as painless as giving blood? How long does it take?

I could also probably get $15 an hour as a tutor, would it a be a better use of my time to do that?

It takes too long if you ask me...you'd be better off getting a part time job. I used to go and it would take about 2 hours each time. Only cool thing is you get to watch some movies

It's almost painless, except it feels like your veins are frozen when they put the saline back in...that kinda sucks

Learn to play poker.

I play mid stakes no limit games a few days a week, at best, and I'm up about $8300 for the year.

Cut grass. I make $1000 every 2 weeks by just working 12-16 hours. I usually work 6 hours on a day off and a few evenings after work. I ran an ad in the newspaper($90) and I can't do all of the work that I get called for.

And the plasma needles are fricking BIG.

No Joke. When the nurse showed me the needle I thought it was a mock-up to show you until it ended up in my arm.
It's cash and it saves peoples lives.

Added: your arm feels like a pice of meat you just took out of the fridge when the put the chilled cells back.

Only complaint about plasma donations for money is the notable scar it leaves.

Badge Of Honor!!!!!!!

** actually I only did this 4 times while at LSU and I still have the scars years later. Back when Murphy's had 25 cent beer and dollar calls that $$ came in handy though.

Giving blood, where's your pride? Oh, nevermind, you are a liberal.

Personally, i'd teach a class. you'd be amazed at the various educational institutions in your area that need help, and you can make that much in one semester. Most of the time you only need an bachelor's. I taught part-time the first 15 yrs out of college...great way to meet chicks.

Think of a cause and become a non-profit. I recommend "Save the Wombats". I don't think anyone's doing it right now.

They are obviously a keystone species whose extinction will cause bio diversity to go down the toilet. Don't much about non-profits, do you?

most of the time when you donate plasma, it doesn't "help" people. it's not like donating blood.

tutoring, on the other hand, benefits society and in theory should give you a reasonable payback in ways other than monetary. combine that with cutting back on extravagances as previously mentioned (like starbucks etc) and you can DONATE your blood to the red cross and feel good about it.

It is certainly more commericalized than blood donating, but that doesn't change the fact that people would die without plasma donors.

Blood donations are used more for replenishments during operations. There are folks who need regular injections of the components of plasma to survive.

Today is your lucky day. Call FEMA, I am sure they are giving free cash out. But you a generator, get reimbursed and then sell it.

watch spending. i'm not by any means extravagant, nor is my wife, but we could come up with this every two months with some mild behavior mods.

apart from that, i'd look into some sort of vending cart. Go to events and sell hot dogs or lattes. Seriously. You could probably clear that in a few weekends.
