100% disagree. If there are property taxes that result in forfeiture of ownership if not paid, that’s not ownership.

Property tax should only be paid twice.

The first time when you buy it, you pay tax on the total value. The 2nd time when you sell it you pay tax on the gains from the sale if the property appreciated in value. And you should get a tax credit/write off if it depreciates and you sold at a loss.

Otherwise as long as you own it, you pay no yearly tax

I know a family in Texas that started a “honey business” with bees to get the property tax reduced on the few acres they live on.

I planted a bunch of blueberry bushes, the tax savings to be classified as agricultural is pretty solid. In theory I'm supposed to sell them but it's never been worthwhile. In a year or two I may actually do a little "pick your own" business.

In California my uncle just had to have two citrus trees to get the ag exemption.

Why, because he won’t allow you to write off more bullshite toys? You people are a joke.

It’s our business, the cost of doing business. I just roll my eyes hard on the “hobby farms” that don’t get the production they could because it’s a tax shelter.

The amount of meat one could get off 20 acres of pasture with hair sheep and chickens alone is astounding when done correctly. Throw in a set of 5-10 stockers to not worry about their winter feed and break up the parasite load the sheep produce. A person could make a small business out of that.

I came across as a douche, but I have a thing about land production and people using land in ways that aren’t maximizing the lands potential and just using the system to buy toys while we actually put in an effort.

You are still driving on roads, you are still likely using a public utility, etc.

Fuel tax covers roads. If you use public utilities you pay the fees and baked into and added onto those services.

What about your police, public servants, etc.?

Look we can do this all day long, every municipality, state, etc. has different taxes for different items.

The point is that if you live on your land and pay absolutely nothing in sales taxes, there are still government services that support you to some degree. Those have to be paid for.

Inb4, you pay if you use it. Lol, that's not how it works and we all know it.

What’s also crazy about the consumption tax only crew is that those consumption taxes would HIGH as frick to fund the federal government.

Add in state and local taxes and you’re probably looking at a 40-50% tax on all goods and services.

Yea that definitely won’t have a chilling effect on commerce.

In my perfect world (in which the government still exists), we’d be talking about sales tax in the low single digits and no other taxes whatsoever.

Break this math out.

It's okay for us to disagree. I believe taxation is theft, and you're okay with taxation. I respect your right to have an opinion other than my own.

You pay taxes when you register your vehicle. You pay taxes on the gas you fuel your vehicle with. You pay taxes on utilities.

I should have clarified that property tax in perpetuity in theft. I agree with consumption taxes to fund government.

TD - “Of course the rich think the economy is doing great, they own assets and can easily stomach inflation price hikes, it’s the middle and lower classes that are getting smoked in this economy”

Also TD - “We should abolish all taxes on assets and quadruple sales taxes”

I mean what else is it going to be?

A sales tax only system would increase the tax burden on the lower/middle class by a frickton. Not really debatable.
