In your scenario nah I wouldn’t do it. Just tell them to move man.

Double???

I'd drive pretty damned far for a limited amount of time, maybe a couple years.

2 hours each way, I could definitely tolerate. Double my current income is life trajectory changing and I'd pay a high price for that at the current stage of my life.

ETA: I currently live in Broussard. Job is in Houma.
Go get a couple of home insurance quotes in Houma, might help sway your decision.

There's always a catch.

Either OP is worth more where he is now, or the new place is not run efficiently. If a business owner or manager is naive enough to pay twice the prevailing wage, that isn't an employer who will survive anyway.

After chasing money all across the gulf south for years, I took a 37% pay cut in base rate, with a longer commute to be able to be home. Granted I am lucky and drive their truck and they pay for fuel.

Yea it sucks on payday, but you can adjust. Move closer or don't do it. Being 40 years old and looking back now, it's just not worth it.

I went from DC to Guam. It's as close to 3rd world as you can get. But this Marine base isn't going to build itself.

Worth the effort

Rent an apartment and leave after work on Friday and roll back up on Sunday nite. Thats too much to let sit and not get.

Have you given thought to renting a studio apartment or extra bedroom to sleep in Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday? If you commute only Monday morning and Friday evening that's more doable.

OP has 4 kids under 12 years old. Leaving the wife to be the exclusive caregiver during the week would probably be impossible for her.

What industry is paying you $280k/year in Louisiana? Additionally unless you are tied down to Louisiana go make $140k+ somewhere else and don’t send four kids to private school. There is no since basically setting $40-60k on fire every year just because Louisiana can’t figure out public school.

Also to be fair this is like working 5 12s every week.

At the beginning of the new year I’m moving my family for a 10% raise plus 6% in the spring along with moving expenses, realtor fees, and closing costs paid for along with a 15k lump sum as part of the relocation package.

For a 200% raise like you’re getting, yeah those kids would just have to make new friends in a new town.
