Somebody, probably a college kid, just made a bunch of money.

I have a sneaking suspicion that once this DDoS is over the price is going to plummet.

The real beauty of bitcoin is there are no lawyers, courts or SEC to get involved with this market manipulation, our rugged individualists opposed to orgnized society that are getting fricked can just grin and bare it.

I agree, instead of top down, meddling, red taped bureaucracy there are going to be actual innovative fixes that will be attempted.

You going to buy another bitcoin after it gets straightened out by the masses?

We'll see what happens tonight, but I'm pretty sure I'll be buying in the next few hours if Mt. Gox is able to fend off the DDoS.

So are we basically watching a pump and dump in real time or is there a possible "reasonable" explanation for what is going on?

You know damned well that failure is a signal to the market.
At this point, so much confidence has been lost in Mt. Gox that something is going to change.

The reasoning is that these DDoS attacks send off panic sells in the market. The price rebounded so quick off of $60 lows on Mt. Gox that is happened again after the sell offs

Oh, the SEC will eventually get involved with the exchanges. All it takes is for one dumbass on Wall Street to get burned with other peoples' money.

I've only used Mt. Gox. I was going to use coinbase tonight but they haven't verified my account yet.

Someone on the btc-e message board just said Silk Road just "cashed out" its btc holdings. Could that be those millions of $$$ you saw traded a few minutes ago?

If history is any guide, the people making the fixes weren't ever the market.

I saw a similar post, but I took it as just an off hand comment. It's certainly plausible.
