The other exchanges are showing last trade prices just under $80.

I thought hackers would want bitcoin to work

Is someone manipulating the exchange in order to profit?

A couple of posters on the btce board are speculating the Russians (no relation) allowed the price to go up when MtGox reopened, they sold their btc's, and then they ddos'd MtGox again to drive the price down again so they can buy back.

Is that plausible?

First off, DDoS'ing is not a hacking skill. It actually doesn't require any skill. So to call these people hackers is not entirely correct. These are likely 'script kiddies'.

I don't know about all the speculation, but I feel like if this is conspiratorial it is coming from somewhere on that side of the world given the time.

If someone is doing that, two thoughts: 1) they are making some serious money, & 2) this will ultimately destroy confidence in btc by honest buyers.
ETA: $71 on btce.

If this continues to happen a serious P2P exchange is going to have to be developed.
