I figured I would post here instead of the OT in hopes of getting some serious advice. My wife and I are both in our early 40s. My wife has been a LPN for approximately 15 years. She currently works from home coding and has done that for approximately 5 years. I am over a Business Department for a fairly large State facility. I have worked for the State for a little over 15 years and have been in my current position for 8 years. I have dual degrees in Accounting and in Finance. Long story short I am tired of my current position and the BS that goes along with State work. I don’t believe I can do another 15 years to get to retirement. It would definitely be nice though. My wife and I have talked about cutting ties and moving to another State. She has no problem with her job because she can go anywhere. We have talked about many different places and it is kind of overwhelming to think of going to a new place. Ideally, we would like to be somewhere in the South because we do still have family here. We definitely don’t want subdivision living where we have neighbors right on top of us but, we don’t want to be in an area that is too far away from work, grocery stores, restaurants, good schools, etc. Texas has come up several times. Can any of you give me some ideas of where I could get a well paying job with my degrees and still have a good work/personal life balance? Really don’t want to have to deal with Hurricanes each year either.

eastern Tennessee or western North Carolina is probably your best bet. That or move to El Dorado, Arkansas and go work for Standard Lithium and help make this board rich!

eastern Tennessee
While we appreciate your request, Tennessee politely declines any new applications to move to the state. We will keep your information on file should we change our minds.
Have a good day!

We’ve talked about the Nashville/Franklin area but just too many subdivisions. I would go crazy in one of those mazes. ElDorado looks like more of a retirement community. And Anchorage is out. I can’t live anywhere that will freeze mid stream if I take a leak outside.

Elberta or Lillian, AL
Close to water
Close to Foley or Pcola (cheaper booze/taxes)
No real development-yet

Is there any big business in the south Alabama area?

Yep El Dorado will be a early retirement community for this board when SLI hits $20/share next year!

Look at NW Arkansas. Nice area. Minor league baseball. Booming businesses.

Silvan Park, Charlotte Park, the Nations, East Nashville, Germantown… there are plenty of areas that aren’t suburban Williamson county.

Where exactly in NW Arkansas are you talking about? I’m not real familiar with that area but, I looked at the map and noticed that’s where Fayetteville is. I’m not sure I would want to live in a college town but, I’m open to other areas. What are some of the booming businesses in that area?

Fayetteville, Springdale, Rogers, Bentonville, and Bella Vista are all in that area. Headquarters of Wal-Mart. Arkansas Children's Hospital. Just businesses everywhere.
I live about 2.5 hours away in Conway, but go up to NWA 4-5 times a summer for minor league baseball. Nice area.

I believe Fidelity and Schwab are doing mass hirings. Schwab has some new towers in the Westlake area. You can probably find an opportunity there with your background.

The NW Arkansas area that was mentioned would definitely be one area to strongly consider. Fayetteville is a nice town but if living “in” a college town isn’t what you want, there are a lot of nice smaller towns in that area and still close to everything you might would want to do for recreation and entertainment.
Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club headquarters, J.B Hunt Transport headquarters, Tyson Foods headquarters, Mercy Health Systems, Rogers and Springdale School districts, University of Arkansas, Washington Regional Medical, U.S. Veterans Medical, Cargill Inc, Simmons Foods, Arvest Bank, McKee Foods, and this is just a part of the large employers in that area.
