I enjoy collecting coins which were minted in New Orleans.

The New Orleans mint operated from 1838 to 1861 when its operations were interrupted by the War of Northern Aggression.

It resumed minting coins for the United States in 1879 and continued producing coins until 1909 when it ceased operations.

Most of my coin purchases are from eBay. I probably have about 400 "O" coins ranging from half-dimes (which is what nickles were called in the 1800's), dimes, quarters, half-dollars and dollars. All of them are silver coins except for 2 gold "O" dollar coins.

I'm in it strictly as an amateur....I've never sold a coin, although I have given some coins away as gifts.

My oldest coins are from the Roman Empire. (I'm pretty sure they were not minted in New Orleans.)

I'm especially proud of a silver Roman Emperor Hadrian 10 denarius coin. It was minted sometime between 134 and 138 AD. Roman coins don't have dates on them but can be dated approximately by whose image is on the coin.

Below is a photo of a silver Hadrian coin similar to the one I have. (My coin is in my safe deposit box and I don't have a picture of it to post.) In case you're curious, the Hadrian silver coin cost me $58 in 2012 and was from an eBay auction.

I got this particular Roman coin after our family went to Great Britain on vacation and saw the remains of the famous "Hadrian's Wall" which traversed all the way across England from the Irish Sea on the west to the North Sea on the east along the northern border of England/southern border of Scotland and was built in the 2nd century A.D. It was ordered to be built by Hadrian using the occupying Roman legions in order to defend against the marauding, savage Scots.

There's no word if Roman citizens chanted "Build the wall!" whenever Hadrian was giving a speech.

My latest indulgence was this morning when I won an eBay auction for the below pictured 1887 silver dollar: (Notice the "O" mint mark below the eagle in the bottom photo.)

I'd enjoy hearing what coins or currency notes some of you have collected along with seeing a photo of some of your collection.

No pics available, but I have a silver coin from a sunken Spanish galleon in the Florida Keys. Mel Fisher salvaged the wreck and sold them back in the 80s. The ship was the Atocha.

Have some bank notes from 100+ years ago when State banks issued their own currency.

My oldest US coin is an Indian head cent from 1802...Before the Louisiana Purchase.

Mind blown.

Your stuff is cool too.

I used to be into Coin collecting and thinking about getting into it. I have a 1900 Indian Head penny that I used to think would be more valuable than it really is. Found out its worth about 50 cents. FML

I have all the proof sets including the different varieties from 1950 to present. Also have a box of some old coins that I just put old coins in when I happen to come across one.

When I was in Russia in the early 90’s I picked up some silver Roman coins, from around that time frame paid .25 each

I have a complete set of "O" silver dollars, one for every year they were minted. I seriously need to get them professionally graded.

Impressive. Does your collection include one from the so-called “missing year”?

I think it was 1895 but I could be off a year or two. That year’s O coinage was stored and eventually melted down for the silver because silver became temporarily very scarce. Only a few thousand of that year’s O silver dollars made it into circulation.

Prices on eBay for the “missing year” silver dollars run into 4 figures. The problem is because of the high price and scarcity of genuine minted O dollars that counterfeiting that year’s coins is rampant, especially by the Chinese.

I don’t have that year.

I don't have any pics of it, but my FIL has a 1776 continental dollar coin.

It is going to go to my wife's brother when he passes and he is a pos who will simply sell it.

I am going to offer to buy it from him if he does try to sell it.

I’ve been thinking about getting buying some silver for it’s metal value, not their numismatic value. I’d like to start with something from the years my kids were born.

Is there a website that you’d recommend or would I be better off finding a local place (BR)?

I believe the rarest coin was 1893, but I also could be off, that is the one coin I really want to get graded. These coins were my from my Dad's collection which were all acquired in the 1960s so I hope it is less likely I have a counterfeit coin, but still possible, there were probably a lot of un-scrupulous coin dealers in the 60s. I have a lot of other complete sets of different types of half dollars, dimes, nickels, many mint sets, and ton of proof sets.

I don’t know of any special website. Like I wrote in the OP I do it for funnsies.
I only know about the “missing year” because every time a dollar from that year popped up on eBay it was way out of my price limit. So, I looked it up just to see why that year is so special.

Southern Coin and Precious Metal in Metairie is a good resource for appraisal, etc.

I've got some older foreign coins I got at a local coin place. I've got a few Canadian 1840s era coins, or maybe it was 1860s. Quite a few foreign coins like French but more recent like 1960s. I had a lot of 2000 $1 coins but not long ago I was being an idiot and tried to wash them in vinegar and took them out next day and they were ruined, I still have a few others I didn't put in to clean. Many of the coins I have are hard as hell to read though. I got a cool dime from 1945 you can still read.

I used to collect coins all the time when I was young. I would make my mom drive me to Louisiana Gold & Gems in Baton Rouge every other week so I could get a new addition. I believe the oldest I have is a half-cent from 1799.

I won't know until my Mom passes away.

My Dad has an AWESOME collection which includes Nazi coins (just for collections) as well as steel pennies from WWII. Lots of uncirculated stuff too. I honestly don't know how far back it goes...it'll take me weeks to catalog it all and to get an appraisal on what I should insure it for. I asked Mom for it to start the process a couple years back since Dad has been gone for 10 years come this month...but she said I had to wait. So I wait. I just wanted to ease into the cataloging rather than do it lump sum...but I'll just wait.

Here is one reputable site for silver bullion. Apmex

Bullion rounds are always cheaper than government issued silver/gold coinage.

I’ve also bought bullion rounds from reputable sellers on eBay.

I’ve never set foot in one of the local coin stores, but you could go that route.

ETA: Not sure they’re still in business, but avoid Northwest Territorial Mint for buying bullion.

Thanks for the rec. Just made a purchase of a few coins and some 1 oz. bars. Interested to see how it looks when they come.

Does anyone have a recommendation on how to store this stuff? I’ve got a small fireproof safe that we use for some personal documents. Would that be sufficient or do I need to invest in something more substantial? I’d also like to get something to display the coins in the future.
