Feedback Request: Side Project Company (Bar/Cocktail Niche)

I am interested in starting a company as a side project and would love to hear the feedback of people on here. The reason I am posting it on the money forum is:

1) It involves business
2) I believe a lot of the people that frequent this forum are part of my target audience.

Target Market: Affluent males age 28-38 that work long hours, but want to blow off steam after work. These are self sufficient men that want to have higher end products in their home. They are interested in making their own craft cocktails for themselves and to impress others.

Products to Sell: High end bar products (top notch quality, vintage look) that allow you to make restaurant quality cocktails at home. All items needed (Shakers, Bar Sets, Ice Serving Kits, Whiskey Tumblers, etc) to make craft cocktails.

Brand Message: This brand would be marketed specifically towards men and would offer vintage/classy looking bar supplies that are as stylish as they are functional (think brands that are sold on Huckberry). Not only would you be able to make impressive cocktails, but you’d be able to proudly display these on your bar or in your kitchen.

With that general information in mind, I'd love to hear any general feedback you have on the idea. Particularly, I am hoping to hear some thoughts on the target audience, idea, and brand message (not necessarily the distribution model).

In general, do you resonate with the idea of higher end bar supplies with a vintage/classy look? All feedback (both positive and harsh) is greatly appreciated.

What sets you apart from what is currently on the market? Personally, im more concerned what's in the cup vs the cup I'm drinking it out of. I'd rather have a good drink in a solo cup vs shite in a fancy glass with good show.

I like my drinks but wouldn't waste my money on something high end like that just to show off.

Issue in my mind is this, plenty of low margin stuff out there, high margin business already owned by a few name brand players as well as the bespoke market and you are shooting for a very targeted audiance.

Seems like a difficult proposition but best of luck to you.

I just went to Huckberry - which has the annoying feature of requiring an email to browse the site - and they sell all the things you're describing.

Like Rogaska, Waterford, etc.? Are you talking about going into the crystal business? Because all the other shite you listed is available all over the web.

Your problem in general, is that people who are really obsessive about home bars (be it cocktail, beer, or wine or all three) already know the equipment they want. They source vintage cocktail shakers or dual zone wine fridges.

If you are talking about just selling a boston shaker, jigger, and stirring spoon to some millenials with an affinity for Mad Men...I gotta be honest, it already exists on the internet. Plus not a lot of repeat sales there.

If you are talking about selling hard to find liquors, etc... that can become problematic when crossing state lines.

What exactly are you hoping to sell that isnt already sold on the internet?

Really appreciate you taking the time to provide honest feedback, this definitely helps.

A lot of the concerns voiced are valid, especially the differentiation piece. I especially agree with the above comment stating this potential audience is either super into cocktails (and already owns equipment) or is a beginner and likely price sensitive.

I’d be selling through Amazon FBA as the distribution model, so fairly limited exposure in releasing a product. In terms of differentiation, I wanted to bundle together supplies that would contain everything needed to produce cocktails:

1. General Cocktail Example: A bundle containing a shaker, strainer, jigger, and juicer
2. Old Fashioned Example: Whiskey tumblers, muddler, ice tray, bitters, sugar cubes

Also very interested in the piece mentioned on bundling all individual supplies/ingredients needed to make cocktails.

Still a lot to think through and I think I have some work to do on better differentiating the offering.
