What essential service do they provide?

Not sure if it's essential but families and friends across the world stay connected through FB. Not saying I believe in their valuation but FB isn't worthless as some of the comments in this thread imply. And I really have zero clue how to value their nearly billion members. The one thing that I'd love to be able to do with their data is be able to draw connections to people. Especially when traveling to foreign countries. Being able to know a persons positions and his connection to a separate business that is bidding on a project would be huge. I bet FB could do that today. Businesses would pay millions for that yearly service, but once people found out they were selling that data people would bail quickly. Or maybe not. Some people just don't care.

No, myspace was never ingrained into just about every website around. Facebook has a plugin on anything. Also, logging in with facebook is a nice feature because I hate having to register to a million different sites to use them.

Not claiming it's value is correct but it will not crash and burn like myspace did.

Communication is a major service provided. Facebook has the capacity to change our world as evidenced by the Arab Spring. Access to information and the ability to rapidly communicate it is the future. It is yet to be seen if FB will be able to keep up with the rapid pace of change. However, they are off to a good start and are tech heavy.

Going public for these internet start ups has always just been a way for the creators to cash out...

It's worth a play around $10. Don't count on getting your money back. However, if someone can figure out a way to monetize their 1 billion users, the sky is the limit. People are literally addicted to facebook. BUT!!!!! Will they pay for it?

I'm going to throw some money at it if it continues it's slide. Am I wrong here?

Are puts available on new issues like FB? I know puts aren't available on all stocks.

Facebook is not going to be the next MySpace, no way. It is basically my and millions of people's modern day diary. All live events, pictures, what you were doing 10 years ago, is on there.

Their advertising service is nothing like Google because people are not on FB searching for something, they are there to communicate, document their lives.

Option are traded on FB (including puts).

ETA: are you planning on buying puts (short) or selling puts (long)? Why are you interested in FB puts? Are you thinking about a specific play?
