Exempt employees - Are you expected to work 40 hrs. Even with time off during the week?

For example: Monday is a holiday. My supervisor expects (demands) me to work 40 hrs Tuesday-Friday. I think this is silly. Feels like I'm being punished for my time off.

My job is still being done above expectations and on a normal work week I am consistently working more than 40

I have never heard of such a policy.

Your supervisor sounds like an a-hole

All of the above. At my company the day before a holiday is a leave at noon day. This goes for Monday holidays also, leave at noon on Friday.

I think you need to find a new job. Sometimes you have to hump it to get shite done, but that can't be all the time.

I ask my people to stay on schedule and get the work assigned for the day done. Sometimes they get 6 hour work days. Some days we work longer. However, I never tell someone that they have to get 40 hours in just to get 40 hours in. That's the dumbest way of managing I can think of. I focus on productivity, daily goals and deadlines with my people.

ETA: I'm an exempt employer. All of my people are on salary and I'm in a business where a lot of people get paid hourly. Our staff appreciates the way we handle things. They like knowing where they stand with their paycheck on the 15th and 30th.

I'm in an hour intensive business and if they told me that I'd honestly probably start laughing. That's seriously one of the most ridiculous things I've probably ever heard.

Of course it's a little different if a big deadline is looming, bit as a general practice, stupid.

This. Basically your supervisor isn't giving you the holiday.

Work 32 hours. Exempt employees can't have their pay docked due to a holiday. If he does try to dock you, then he'll have to consider you a non-exempt employee.
