Got a new car this week. Was given the whole extended warranty speech in finance department. Immediately turned everything down. Until they brought up a glass and tire/wheel package. I'm an engineer and specifically remember teachers explaining failure statistics and how they are used to determine car warranties and how they aren't worth it. But glass cracks and flat tire aren't exactly the same as bearings going out. I take good care of my car, but in the last 2 years I've replaced 2 windshields and both vehicles had chips in the current windshields. I've also had 4 flats/nails in tire over the last 6 months. It's been very annoying. I spend a lot of time on Houston interstates, so I know it's something that's likely to happen. The windshield replacement is very high on this car and the tires and rims will be more than I'm used to as well. This added about 20 bucks a month to my note. I feel like an idiot for falling for it, but do like the piece of mine that for 5 years, I get OEM glass for free (no deductible) if there's even just a chip, and a brand new tire (no patch or plug) if there's a nail.

I know I can pay a deductible though insurance, but do not like filing claims and have heard stories of not covering OEM glass. Plus they wouldn't cover tires and wheel scuffs/damage.

I get the peace of mind argument for warranties. However, $1200 for a few tire patches and windshield repairs that are usually covered under insurance seems high.

why would someone purchase the second largest purchase they will ever make in their life and not protect it with an extended warranty?

navigation, heated, cooled seats, power lift gate, driver alert package, sunroof, dvd, road hazard, trip interruption, curb rash, tire replacement.

if you have to use the warranty one time it pays for itself. If I'm purchasing a $60,0000-$70,0000 vehicle I'm buying an extended warranty.

But this isn't tire patches. They replace the tire. And if the tires are worn, they won't replace just the tire that's punctured, they'll replace the others as well (so I'm not stuck with just the one brand new tire). Plus if it's the wheel is destroyed or even scuffed up (like hitting a curb), they replace that too.

I've heard windshield replacement through insurance will not always replace with Lexus glass. Sometimes it's an issue with the rain sensing windshield. This coverage will give me new glass instead of a repair if it's a small chip or Crack. No deductible. And I know I'm getting the OEM glass with no issues. They'll also come pick up my car to do it.

We have warranty coverage on darn near anything and everything...those which inhale/exhale and those which don't. Will be considering additional (extended) vehicle coverage in a few months....exploring now.

I do wonder about the wisdom of doing so.

Guess we'll see if need arises.

When the common philosophy of "never buy the extended warranty" was born, the worst thing a car owner was worried about was the rare occurrence of a engine or transmission problem. The complexity and repair cost of the systems in today's cars makes the risk/cost analysis of the extended warranties less black and white. I also have no problem paying $1200 bucks for peace of mind even on a $30K vehicle.

road hazard warranties are actually good buys, if you get it for 5-600$. Definitely not 1200.

One windshield is more than the 1200. One wheel is probably up there too.

I'm also thinking this could be free tires. When they get close to needing replacement, I'm going to drive through some nails .

I was borderline on this and the windshield and wheels costs were one of the big concerns getting my first "luxury" brand vehicle. I told the guy I wasn't interested, but when I read up asked more questions and decided what the hell. Guess we'll see if it's worth it.

In regards to the other coverages and extended warranties, statistically you are better off not getting them. The company wouldnt offer it otherwise. Just a fact.

An extended warranty is a duplicate warranty. Manufacturers have their warranty which is, say, 3 years, and covers years 1-3. The extended warranty covers years 1-7. And, when your warranty runs out at year 3, there are warranties you can buy that are reasonable, if you so choose.

I'll never understand why you'd buy insurance you don't need. Extended warranties are a money maker, statistically you won't use what you paid for it. If you can sleep with that, then do it. Its up to you.

I just don't want to hear people tell me they are a "good investment". No they are not statistically.

Here's the other issue OP, where all is the work covered to be completed? Just at the dealership right? Let's say you are 60 minutes from a dealer camping out and get a flat tire, that's a PITA to deal with now because you are worried about using your warranty instead of just paying for the cheapest easiest option.

Road side assistance is covered as well. So they'll get me running (full sized spare) until I get back to a certified dealership (there are like 8 Lexus dealerships around me)

I thought the same thing about flood insurance. Thought if I flood everyone is going to flood. Well everyone flooded. Going to be about a 50k mistake. I'm not a huge insurance guy but this did open my eyes a little bit. I'm tired of learning things the hard way.

So, you are stating that the dealership sold you something that they will lose money on?

Is that the same as believing every person who says they took the casino to the cleaners?
