Disputing a Charge on Debit Card - Pros v. Cons
Posted on 7/12/11 at 11:11 pm

Long story short, a company has charged me a relatively small amount [$75] that I feel is in error. Basically I think the the company is trying to take advantage of me and is over-charging me despite a very clear agreement on what the charge was meant to be [we were so clear in fact that I believe the manager at this point is just lying to me]. I have attempted to contact the company owner and they stand firm in their stance and I stand firm in mine. Is it worth going through the hassle of disputing the charge with my bank [and the possible collection dispute afterward] or should I just swallow the pride and pay the amount?
For those that don't wish to read the whole thing - is $75 worth it?

Yes, it really should not be that hard to dispute.

Technically, the bank does not legally have to refund a disputed charge on a debit card up to $500.
Most banks do refund the dispute solely because it is not worth the bad reputation they would receive for denying you a legitimate claim.

If it's a singular seprate transaction the ease will be greater.. The burden is much greater if actual signature was used.. As someone on the company side. . We only were required to produce an authorized signature receipt unless the card was deemed stolen.

Thanks for the responses. Basically I know I am in the right, but I don't want to end up hurting my credit in the long run over a $75 charge that doesn't really mean much.

This should have no effect on your credit.

Obviously I have a limited amount of knowledge on the entire situation, but I assume that once I dispute the charge it will be revoked and the company will then turn me over to a collection agency that will try and "convince" me to pay my debts. I couldn't care less about a few phone calls here and there, but I assume there is some mechanism by which my credit is affected by these debts being handed over to an agency.

Oh I see what you are saying, I also have limited knowledge, but I think once you dispute it your company debits your account. And then the company fights the bank for the 75 dollars.

The bank will just take the hit for the $75. I doubt they will even waste their time trying to collect such a small amount.
They will credit your account without much problem. I had two instances where they credited my account. One of those times was actually my fault but I was to embarrassed to go back in and tell them that after they credited my account. (got real fricked up one night and played $300 worth of online poker

Ha, been there before but for about 4x that much multiple times. Never disputed it though. Though the wife disputed whether or not I should have an open gambling account. Glad I grew out of that shite.
Seriously though, as far as disputing a charge it is simple. I've had to do it a couple times and its a very easy process, especially if you are a good customer with your bank/cc company and don't have a history of doing it once a month.

Care to elaborate regarding the situation?

First time was in college. Went to the Gold Mine in the quarter and made the mistake of running a tab. They charged my card about 3 x what I spent. I asked for an itemized receipt and they wouldn’t give me one. Arguing ensued. I was kicked out of the bar and they just charged the card. I disputed the charge with my card company and they fought it. It was taken off of my account.
Second time was an ebay transaction. Bought 8 Lacoste “NEW” Polos and half of them had been washed and were just in shitty condition. I tried to work directly with the seller by offering to return 4 of them if he would refund me for the other 4. He refused. I then returned all 8 and disputed it with my card company. Once the company got involved he refunded my money.
