Avios are far from worthless. Look into using the Avios on Iberia. The Avios cost is lower as are the fees.

Ya, his main problem is where his friend is going doesn't match the wheelhouse of the currency being used. Frankly, I think airlines bank on that for the breakage.

In other news, my AA miles have come through. I'll be heading AUS-SFO-HKG-BKK on Alaskan and Cathay Pacific business class. Return I was able to manage RGN-HKG-ORD in business on Cathay and will buy ticket to Austin.

2018 is the Ruxpin blowout before having kids. South Africa in March, this trip in October.

I also have to start gathering about 600,000 miles for our next two planned trips. Wife wants Greece in 2019 and Japan for the 2020 Olympics. And you know there will be devaluations before then. I'm at about 240k United and 80k or so UR.

She's always wanted to do an Olympics and we want to do one not in the US so it seems like the best one that will be operated correctly.

I don't think we'd stick to just Tokyo though. We'd do a few days and probably see gymnastics and pay a billion dollars for those tickets.

Good luck, and godspeed

But in all seriousness, Japan is amazing. I'm sure we'll talk about it over the next couple of years

Speaking of, how are your SA plans coming together?

I'm stacking up MR points right now. Business is good and all expenses go on the Amex. Have about 350k banked right now.

We're doing Spain (Madrid) and Italy (Piedmonte and Tuscany) next September for 2 1/2 weeks. Don't have anything else planned yet other than Isla Mujeres in early February. We're supposed to go to St. John at the end of May/early June for my buddies 50th but I'm waiting to see how the island recovers before pulling the trigger.

So far 2018 is a bit of a light travel year for us but that could change.

Hopefully our experience in India helps. It doesn't get much crowded than that and they don't follow rules like I imagine Japan does. Did you ever post pics of that trip?

Pretty much set. It isn't a long trip with us splitting about 8 days between Cape Town/Vineyards and Safari. I still have to buy our ticket from JFK to Austin though which sucks. Have a sick AirBnb I need to post a pic of here.

Our place in Franschhoek

That's awesome. How much is that place running you? Splurge on a cage diving trip with great whites. That story drops jaws like you wouldn't believe

As for Japan, haven't posted pictures yet. Frankly, haven't even gone through my pictures yet. I've been more than a little swamped at the office after being gone for three weeks

We have two guys who want to do it and two girls (SOs) that don't.

I hear ya. My wife is pretty good about gathering photos and using those online photo album sites that will print off a book for you. They are cool to have around the living room.

I've never been to Spain (ha Three Dog Night reference).

We're stopping in Madrid for a long weekend on the way to Italy to get rid of the jet lag from the overnight flight. Avios also go a lot farther on Iberia than on BA and the added cost is much cheaper so it makes sense for us to do the trip this way.

My wife spent a summer in Spain (she's 1/2 Cuban) when she was a teenager. We'll do Madrid this time and then probably plan a longer trip to see more of the country.

Cool. That makes sense.

It really is a great place all around.

Either leave their asses behind or let them stay on the boat

Most of the tourist ones just have a cage on the side of the boat that you drop into. It's not what you normally think of as a dropped cage with you in scuba gear. It's perfectly safe and requires no physical exertion.

This is a good example of what it's like:

Ya I'll be OK with that. You remember that video with the shark getting into the cage on the top part that went around last year or so?

THAT is what I would want to avoid.

I just need to see if we have enough time. That town where you do that is kinda in a weird spot with our time limitations. If you can do it for like an hour it may work.

According to Google maps Gansbaai is 1hr 40m from Franschhoek which is a little closer than Gansbaai to Cape Town which is 2hr 15m.

Haha yeah, the bars are really close together. The only risk is if someone idiot sticks their hands out, which is why that bar is there for everyone to hold onto. Keeps the hands from wandering

I'd definitely do the shark dive. My wife wasn't too keen on it but absolutely had a blast! Being a bit claustaphobic I thought I would have a problem with the cage but thiswas perfect. Didn't think about being in the cage until the sharks were circling close by.

How long did it take from shore to back on shore?

That was in Hawaii and not great whites. The experience was awesome. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

This was almost a decade ago, but I want to say it was a half day kind of thing. Hour or two out. Hour or so out there. Hour or two back. I imagine it varies by company and location.
