Ah yes if we ignore our largest cost we made money!!
So no they are not making a profit

This is painfully transparent when you combine it with the public campaign over the last few days. Their product is the frontier LLM and they want to slow spending on it so that the economics of their business briefly make sense.
The problem is that the frontier is 12 months behind them max. And then they’re a commodity.

Would you expect a firm in this stage of buildout to make a profit?

I don’t understand how these frontier companies are going to keep consumers engaged. Consumers do not need the very best models…open weight will be totally sufficient going forward. Consumers just need an easy wrapper to access them and the cost of those tokens is minimal versus the frontier.
Frontier models are really a professional use case. Corporations and research labs can get utility from the very best models and will be willing to pay a premium for some of their use cases.
I do think we are on the cusp of the open weight models shifting to prominence. I don’t need to spend $20/month on Claude or GPT forever.

go back and find Alex Karl’s rant on CNBC a few weeks ago. Just like with bitcoin (if you don’t own the wallet you don’t own the coin) or with gold (if you don’t own the metal you don’t own the gold), with AI if you don’t own the data you don’t own the alpha.

No but I was responding to the poster that says they are making a profit

They also stacked revenue into a single quarter and then annualized it to project the entire year.
OpenAI got caught compensating subscriptions and characterizing it as marketing expenses …which makes their marketing budget 3X larger than Coca Cola.
