My wife is 62. The victim of a brain a few years ago. Her health is steadily declining. She may have a couple or three years left. I am 60 and have recently been diagnosed with cancer. I got about 18 months to 2 years or so.

I second that. I pray that you both find some peace and solace during these trials and tribulations.

We buried my Dad last spring up here in DFW and the plot was $2700, casket was $3200 (basic model in the middle cost wise) and the embalming, service, etc was $1200. Talking to my cousin who lives in Beaumont he was shocked how cheap it was. He said in Beaumont just a plot will be more like $6000. I guess DFW is an expensive place to live but a cheap place to die.

When my soul leaves this earth, I don't care what happens to my body. Just curious what reasons are out there that oppose cremation.

Can’t speak for the other guy, but my wife is opposed to cremation for religious reasons.

I’ve learned not to question her religious reasons. “Why does God want you to further enrich the funeral industry and make your surviving loved ones less financially secure?” doesn’t get me much traction.

Put the money in a joint account with access to whoever is handling your final arrangements. Prepare a will and leave instructions regarding this account with the will.

It can take a while to probate an estate and sort out the financial transfers. But funeral and burial expenses need to be dealt with the week you die so it's best if they can just write a check from a checkbook their name is on.

When my brother in law passed a black funeral home in Birmingham cremated him, shipped us the ashes, and handled all the death certificates for $700. We spread his ashes on his property in a private service. Great service.

I'm going the Hunter S Thompson route.

Cremated and shot out of a cannon.
