5 weekend trips over 26 weeks?

it's about 15% of budgeted spend.
My wife gets a higher monthly amount then i do .
It's about 7% for her, 5% for me, and 3% in a category that's for our together splurges.
She's good about the monthly budget. If she has a couple hundred left on the last weekend, best believe she's burning it shopping online or at the mall.

Same goes for groceries.. why cash when there are lots of credit cards that give cash back on groceries? It's free money!
Other people on here will talk about credit cards, points, miles, etc... but we have learned the hard way that those things don't work for us in our point in our lives.

OK I'm a mom ... we do family vacation and the past 5 or 6 years we've done a ladies beach trip in the fall. Beach, shopping, eating out. Other than that the only trips I take would be a get away with my daughter if husband the boys are fishing. Not that my opinion matters, but that's excessive. Or at least in my world it is.

I exercise some budget control by having multiple accounts. A household account for shared expenses (spouse & I contribute to this one, mortgage/insurance/household expenses get paid out of it, as well as the monthly balance on the miles-earning household credit card used for gas/groceries), a joint savings where we stash the emergency funds/planned savings for big purchases (furniture, travel, & such). Plus he has a personal checking and various business accounts (checking, savings, trust) which all get an allocated deposit monthly. Ditto for me: personal checking & backup savings get set amounts direct deposited each month.
The set savings & bill allocations come off the top, leaving me with a few hundy in fun money. I don't worry too much about precisely tracking the "extra" expenditures. Since I put in specific amounts each month into these various accounts, I have a general sense of whether the previous month's expenditures were over/under. Whenever the household checking gets too fat or lean, it comes out of (or goes into) the joint savings.
Oh, and the retirement contributions happen automatically each month as well.
So I don't sweat the little stuff week to week, mainly because I'm nailing down the "big" stuff automatically. I have no interest in policing my spouse's purchases, as long as he's made his retirement, savings, & household contributions each month. We're both working toward the same financial goals, which is the main point.

This is the whole point of the budgeting process. it is excessive. But with our current budgeting system, I cannot object b.c well its within our budget.
But I want her to pick and choose her trips, vs. just doing everything. She is not going to react well when she realizes that she is going to have to tell her friends no, or not visit her parents. In fact, I see an epic level meltdown.
And its not really a money issue. we have plenty of money to do these types of things, its that I would prefer us to use that money to travel together vs. her getting a vacation. I actually was out of town for 4 of her 5 getaways, but I only had to pay for one. And it was like $100.
eta: we do not have kids.

It sounds like you need to tell your wife to stop booking vacations without you. You don't need an elaborate monthly budget to do that

I have tried that route, and it usually ends up with me getting screamed at. So I am going to try this way now.

I'm pretty sure Hawkeye doesn't have kids.
If these weekend trips are $3000+, sure...but two working professionals should be able to spend $500 on a few weekend trips. Hell, wife and I went to Huntsville last weekend and it may have cost us $300 total.

If this is true my friend, you have a wife problem not a money problem.

I have no issue with her taking weekend trips, I just want her to be a bit more selective. In fact, I want her to have a life outside of me. I just think 5 is a tad excessive.
I figure she has dropped about $2k, maybe $2500 on these trips.

Getting rid of the wife would cost a lot more than these weekend getaways.
She is actually awesome at spending everywhere else. She doesn't really shop, she just can't say no to her friends.

Ok. I was with you on this until I skimmed the "going a day without spending money" thread.
In which, you said:
So it seems like she doesn't buy much, but likes to travel at an average of $400 or so.
WTF do you want from her? Sounds like she's being reasonable.

the wife and I do this probably every week. The wife hardly buys anything (thanks! hon), and mondays aren't a day we grocery shop or do anything that would be spending money.

She is great. I just want her to pay attention to what she spends money on, as opposed to just spending it. Prioritize, be conscious of what you are spending money on.
This is a good thing for everyone to do IMHO.
