Agree. Whatever you don't take serious you are automatically setting yourself up for failure.

I've been at this a very short while so i can offer advice as a newbie. Last year was a mirage. If you were a newbie and started buying after the crash you couldnt lose . With that said i toke some profits which i should have let sit. This year has been a challege especially if you were heavily into tech like most new people. I have listened to a few pros on here that have recommended ETF's instead of just guessing on stocks. AS a new person i highly recommend looking at some diverse ETF's. to add diversity so if one sector is doing bad you have a chance to balance that out hopefully to get thru the down days.

This is an interesting twist. Last summer when anyone could pick winners we would see a new thread every week or two asking about how to get into investing for a living. Now that things have become more difficult to pick stocks it seems we are reduced to doing it for a hobby.

get Etrade. far less restrictions on what you can buy. Also, you can begin with just 500 dollars. Your best route is to paper trade for several months if you are doing it as a hobby. Either that or start with using $100 per trade. JMO

Best route when getting into stocks as a hobby
Couple friends do this and haven't had a chance to sit down with them, but what's a good site or route to take if you want to dabble in buying/selling stocks as a hobby?
We did this when the kids were younger.
Each started with a set amount, made investments, tracked results, and whoever did better won.

Like I said in that long-winded post, even though I’ll never be an F1 racer, I still take my racing hobby seriously. I study (paper /wink/) track maps and think about where my braking points are. Why? Cause I don’t want to go to a track day and get passed by some teenage girl in a Miata with a roll cage. Whatever I do, I get more enjoyment from it if I’m (roughly) competent. But that’s just me.
So I have no idea why you got downvotes for that. Tough crowd.
As for my suggestion that he first read, study and paper trade to get his feet wet and learn the very basics of trading (does he even know a stop loss from a stop-limit right now???), that’s how I learned to trade options. And as I did paper trades, I studied the mechanics and rules of the options market. For the ones who say that you learn more by just jumping in with real money, that’s fine. Real money losses (or gains) will introduce emotions into your investing. And that’s not a good thing. Emotional panic sellers and FOMO buyers increase implied volatility, and that’s good for what I do. But this is just what I’ve been doing for about 30 years, so what do I know?
Good luck to the OP either way.

Why are you interested in this route? You want to make a lot of money, don't you? Then go into the cryptocurrency market. It's the surest way.
