Best Business Career Paths?

Hey guys, in your opinion, what is the best field to try and get into for a college grad coming out with a finance/management degree? Is it almost necessary now a days to get an MBA in y'alls opinion?
I'm about to start my 3rd year at UF with an average GPA and looking into internships for next summer, but don't really know what field a financial degree will have jobs and opportunities to advance in the future.
Is it better to try and get in with a medical, energy, oil type field or real estate or general financial planner?
I'm at that point in my life where I need to start making these important decisions but "have no idea what I want to do" still, outside of something in the general business sector.

What are your financial goals in one year, five years and ten years?
What are you passionate about?

You need to figure out first and foremost if you want to do operational business or financial planning/portfolio management/institutional.
A pretty standard gig is as a financial analyst for a business. Learn a lot and get a good sense for how a business runs.
The financial planning side of the house is trickier because there are so many different options each of which can be quite specialized.

It depends on how much money you want to make and how hard you will work. I graduated from UF back in August with a degree in Finance and minor in Entrepreneurship and went into financial planning.

I felt similar to you then I took Sales Management with professor La Barbera. Try to get into that class if you can, best class at UF.

in all seriousness, insurance is an extremely high paying field that is desperate for young talent.

I think banking is a great place to start a career. Key word, start. Investment banking or commercial banking, both have unique pros and cons, but great places to start. Getting into an industry group in one these areas positions you well for a long and successful career in that industry. You will also make more in entry-level banking positions than other entry-level finance positions, which is nice.

I've been told the opposite and to avoid the field, that the pay has tapered off and the day and age of the local agent being showered in cash is drawing to a close. My source indicated its because the companies are paying less and also because of the number of online insurance companies have eliminated the need for the local agent. They made it out like a glorified call center position. Interesting...

People always will be sick...and people always will be dying....so, if I were starting over, I'd pick something related to those two...

This really depends. It has "potential" to be high paying. It's not that high paying unless you can pull clients with shite loads of money or eventually get handed a book of business from a already very successful agent. Young people rarely make alot of money in insurance unless they are lucky and are extremely hard working.

Yep. And the insurance industry will open a shite load of doors for you in the future. It also, in my opinion, will give you a great education on how to run your own business.

I could see this as an independent agent for sure.

I would be miserable working in insurance and banking. I find many other industries much more exciting.
^^ This is hard to know until you actually experience them.

Luck has nothing to do with it. If you're with a good company and you work hard, you'll make money.

I know a guy who works for a good reputable company. They dont make shite the first few years. He cold calls alot. Like I said its pretty rare.

Another guy I know married a girl whose uncle owns an insurance business and was retiring soon. Basically gave him the business.

Luck only matters in the first couple of years, hard work and persistence will ALWAYS overcome luck eventually.

Thanks for the replies, guys.
I won't have any loans, so a solid job that can hopefully get me some decent money coming out so I can live comfortably but also possibly put some money away early before I start a family. I'm not looking to become a millionaire or anything, but make enough that I can provide comfortably for my family and be able to have/do nice things.
Honestly, I really don't know. I'm a pretty laid back person in general and understand work isn't going to be "fun", especially starting out. My mindset right now is that I work my arse off coming out of college, get ahead and by then, hopefully I either love the field I start out in or find a passion that I could possibly make a horizontal change to that field after working and excelling where I start.
