I have a really good buddy of mine up here in NOVA that is recruiting for a higher profile controller position in New Orleans. I would consider the comp plan pretty good for that area, but I'm also not in the controller/CPA capacity personally.

I'm just trying to network for him down that way so wanted to toss it out there. If anybody's interested, shoot me an email Lnobles@redstickag.com and I will make an introduction. Not that I have to mention it, but everything is of course confidential.

Are they looking for someone to report to work in person in New Orleans?

If so, hard pass. They aren't paying enough.

Yes, but there may be opportunities for some WFH. It pays well IMO for the area and has a lot of upside to it as well.

Let me know when you find one and how you did it. Controller is a thankless stressful job.

So what’s your opinion of value for a controller position in New Orleans?

I have no idea.

It’s just an obvious red flag when someone says “pays well for the area” or that there’s “room for advancement” when talking about pay.

I’ve never seen a job described like that that didn’t pay significantly less than market and all of the “advancement” you could achieve is anchored by the crappy starting pay.

Being a CPA from the NOLA area, I completely agree with this. I have seen advertisements with this, just to find out the posting was in the $60-75k range with the argument about it being so much higher than the median income for the area.

If OP is sure that "the comp plan pretty good for that area", then he should have no problems listing the comp plan; especially since he is not disclosing the name of the business.

If the comp were really that good you'd drop the number.

The comp plan is never good which is why there are less CPAs every year.

Controllership at smaller companies can be straight garbage.

They want someone who will supervise all AR, all AP, all of payroll, manage all the contracts, do all the various yearly insurance packages, tax plan, and oversee the annual audit.

Pay is 95k and you work 60 hours a week. Oh but you get casual Fridays!

I don't know how they find anyone for these jobs. I suspect they're probably hiring people who are either grossly underqualified or desperate.

^^This. I suppose I fell into the "desperate" category. Not that I was necessarily desperate, I just needed to get my foot in the door somewhere to begin gaining the x years of experience to take the next step in my career. It was also my move to get from public to industry and in a time when I was getting multiple rejections because "you interviewed well and you may be a quick learner, but based on your actual experience I just do not have the time/people to train you to be where I need you to be now"...

Funny thing is the person I replaced was a glorified bookkeeper that was way in over her head, even after the 10 years she held the position. She relied on the company's public accountants to bail her out every few months; and they paid dearly for it.

They will pull a Big 4 senior who will think 60 hours a week is slow.

Comp plan is up to $200k a year. There you have it. Fire away.

It’s not my position I’m recruiting for so really not the person that should disclose it. Just trying to help out a good buddy of mine.

I’m sure it’s low for the MB ballers.

Is that a lot for a controller? Serious question.

I would think it is in New Orleans especially, but I don’t know either honestly.

That is very high controller pay IMHO but totally depends on the size of the company. Small business? Absolutely high/good pay. Fortune 500? Perhaps not

Yeah. My sister is a controller in the metro area for a company with about 150ish employees. I have zero idea what she makes but from her lifestyle I would assume (which I know is never good to assume) she makes double that.
